View Full Version : Fitchburg, MA 2007 - Our 5th year gathering
MATBird
Jan 22, 2007, 08:13 AM
The date is set for April 15, 2007, the week after Easter, as usual.
Of course it's too early to have the flyer yet but I will post it when ready.
I am posting this notice so you all can plan ahead for the first spring event of the season, here in the Northeast.
You don't need a TBird to attend.
I will be calling the Sheraton Four Points hotel this week.
Usually the more we have staying, the better our price may be. Therefore, I need to know what dates you plan on staying overnight, so I can get the best rate. -
Note: The show starts on the morning of the 15th. You can post here or send me a PM or email.
So far we have 11 Birds planing on coming to the show:
George (MATBird)
Bruce and Kirsten (Bruce)
Dino and Susan (Blue Heaven)
Wes (Bird03) Saturday and possibly Friday
John and Deb (micamaven)
Sal and Jo (salprint)
Rich (Sarno) haven't heard form Rich in CT yet
Chuck (Chuck) Saturday only
George (witchcitybird)
Sal and Karin (Prairie360)
Lee and Cindy (02Leebird)

Hotel information:
I was able have them hold the same rate as last year for us and I have committed to 15 rooms so don't let me down.....The rate is $95.00 + tax per night.
All you have to do is call in at 978-534-9000 after February10, 2007 and book you reservation under "The New England Thunderbird Group".
They need time to write up the contract, get it to me, and then back. I'll remind you all in two weeks.....

What a great group of friends you have up there in New England, George! But, I didn't see my transplanted Belle Sistah, Barb, on your list. Surely, she would be in attendance, too? :puzzled:

Hi George & all,
Plan on trying to come again, but not sure with other plans as of yet. I will post more once we have re-viewed a few more things.

Barb's weekends a seem to be pretty full. She usually posts later as she knows what her schedule is. She'll probably be there though.

I sure hope she is able to join y'all. I know how close she feels to all the men and women in your group, and how grateful she was to be accepted. She's a good gal! Now I'll get outta this thread ......

Bummer John, we'll miss ya - I booked my reservation a few minutes ago - I'll be there rain or shine, the trailer will be making it's debut. George, is there a reservation form for this event? I can never remember.
Bruce
Feb 12, 2007, 10:34 AM
Ditto Chuck's comment John. Reservation made. Nothing new to debut. The rain or shine thing, well we will just have to wait and see.

Feb 12, 2007, 11:58 AM
John - Ask your step daughter to put things on hold for the weekend:laugh:
Chuck - No pre-registration, we're all set as a group
Bruce - Too bad Chuck didn't buy a bigger trailer, he would have been able to stop by and you could bring the new ride, if it rained
But then again, let's not talk the R word:omg: , only sunshine

No need for extinguisher, there is no judging here, just roam observe and enjoy.
By the way, hotel for Sunday???? The show is Sunday and we check out Sunday AM. Did you mean Saturday or just planning to stay over Sunday instead of going home that night?
EVERYONE THAT IS NOT REGISTERED - Wednesday, 3-15-07 is the last day for the $95.00 rate.

My update above on who is staying and who is going has some voids so I just sent a PM to;
Chuck, George, Sal, Nick, Rich, Roger, Sal, John, Barb and Claude:
1) So they can take advantage of the $95. rate- Wednesday is the deadline.
2) It will help Wes with dinner planning.
3) It would also be nice to know who is not attending so we are not held up Sunday morning.
Thanks all!
ps, John, I know you said there's a baby due but just in case it comes early.....

George, I got an e-mail from Serge and Nicole saying that they'll be coming to Fitchburg but they'll leave on Friday so they'll have more time and won't feel rushed. It seems that Serge went on his own and got himself some reservations, but I don't know for sure about that...I'm just assuming...
As for Claude and I, I sent you a PM. We will do everything we can to come to Fitchburg but since we're leaving this Friday for Florida, it leaves us little time to get reservations, etc...so we'll see what we need to do when we get back around April the 4th.
thank,
Claude
P.S: We're looking forward to meeting the "Space Coast Thunderbird" club as we're scheduled to attend their cruise on March 31st!

Sounds like a plan
home depot off 128(by Jordons furnniture). We could really make this fun and pickup stragulars along the way i.e
Mobil station at corner of Route 2 and 2a at Concord town line.
Taylor St exit Route 2 west in Littelton just past Route 495.
Route 12 exit off Rroute 2 west in Leominster just past Route 190.
Any other ideas?
Anyone else driving in want to join or have any meeting spots in mind?

John, I think it's time to apply some Thunderbird logic to the situation. The new kid will be around for the next 100 years, your Thunderbird buddies won't be. I'm sure that if you explained this to Heather she would totally understand and let you come to Fitchburg. With this in mind -- see ya there

We need to know exactly how many people are attending the different events whether you're staying over or not and whether your S.O. (significant other) will be attending all or just some of the events that you are attending.
So the options are:
Friday night Dinner?
Saturday 10:00 AM cruising including the Colling Car and Airplane Museum(click here for info on museum) (http://www.thunderbirdnest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15688), bowling, Lunch, and a pit stop?
If you can't make it Saturday morning, can you join us mid-cruise later on that day?
Saturday night Dinner?
Sunday at the show?
Sunday afternoon late lunch/early dinner after the show?
I'll be finalizing all the plans for events this week so let us know what you can attend.
Salprint

Jo and I are in for all Wes. Especially the bowling.....
Just not sure about the Sunday late lunch. Its according to how late it is.
And Friday we should get there in time for dinner.

At this point in time I do not know if I will be in Massachusetts that weekend. I hope you can presume I will be and allow me to bow out if I am not. If you need a gauranteed hard count you had better not count me for Saturday. If we are here what I would like to happen is for Barbara and I to join all the Saturday events from morning through Dinner and I will participate in all the Sunday events alone. We will not attend any Friday events.

George, do you know if they are planning to have food at the show this year?
MATBird
Mar 29, 2007, 06:26 AM
Chuck, Yes, they have a 5 year contract with the same vendor
P.S. - For everyone - The entrance gate has been changed this year. We'll go in a different way. And last years entrance will now be the Exit.
The reason for this is; the main road was backed up all the way to the highway two years ago and the police asked us for this change. It helps both emergency and security for the airport

Thanks Phil, the keys are in the front hallway closet (you'll see the key rack). However, I don't think you can only drive one block.
BTW, you can also start the Torch Red (softtop) and Inca Gold (hardtop) as well.
Thanks again, I do appreciate your concern and help.

Hi everybody!...Claude and I just got back from Florida today a little tired but ok. It all began on our trip down, where we got caught in a snowstorm near Albany, NY and driving got quite scary with my two wheel drive dually pickup truck having summer tires only with the trailer pulling behind with the T-Bird in it!!...:omg: ...After getting through the storm, everything went smoothly and we had a great time for two weeks in Florida where we drove the T-Bird everyday! We went to a gathering in Ft. Lauderdale at the corner of I-595 and University where we met Fred ( fla bird 03) and another fellow with an '02 inspiration yellow 'Bird. We also attended a nice cruise on March 31st in the Orlando region sponsored by the "Space Coast Thunderbird Club" led by Tom Aglio ( Tom's T ) that included a meal at a make-it-yourself pancake restaurant followed by a gathering at Tom's daughter place where we had a great time...Claude and I even won a few door prizes
Then, when we drove back home, that's when things took a bad turn...At about 10 miles south of the Florida-Georgia border on I-95, the alternator belt on my pickup broke off, taking out all the power steering, water pump and a/c belts all at the same time... The engine then started to overheat and I had to drive another 4 miles with no power steering, power brake to get to the nearest exit. Then I had no choice and had to take the T-Bird out of the trailer and drive another 7 miles to buy replacement belts, go back to the truck and work for 1 1/2 hour to replace all of them myself.
Last but not least, as we were nearing home, at about 2 miles from home, believe it or not, the transmission on the pickup truck let go stranding us a second time!!! !!! I had to call a friend to come to our rescue and pull us home. Now I don't know how much it will cost to repair the transmission and the power steering pump that also went bad!!!
But don't worry ...the T-Bird made it ok through all these mishaps and we'll do our best to attend the Fitchburg event...I'll keep you posted soon...
Phew!!!...
Tired but ok,
Claude & Claude

Thank you John, George and Chuck for your encouragement!...It's true that the truck can always be fixed (and it's already in the shop) but it's all the inconveiniences it creates that we could have done without.. :frown: It's going to need a rebuilt transmission and also a power steering pump...
As for Fitchburg, I cannot promise anything yet, but be assured that Claude and I will do our best to attend!...

Well based on what weather report you look at, it could be sunny on Sunday or showers. They are also predicting snow on Thursday up here north of the MassPike. My question to George would be, even if it is sunny on Sunday, how dry is that field going to be.? I know in past years we were never on the tarmack but in the grass. Do you foresee a mud situation?
I am hoping for the best, but mother nature seems to be making us pay for that mild Nov and Dec.

Yes that inner field is rather damp after rain/snow. The field on the far end is much drier but that's where the 300+ vendors are.
We never made the tarmack because we went in a little later than others. If we do go in earlier, we could be on the tarmack

IMPORTANT NOTICE
FITCHBURG: The weather forecast as of now:
Thursday rain - I just spoke with Fitchburg people and there is no snow there today, just raining
Friday’s forecast is for 47 degrees and cloudy
Saturday forecast is for 51 degrees and clear
Some have suggested that they are coming in their regular cars, and of course there’s always Chuck who will have his trailer/car. So, here is the current plan for Fitchburg for those who want to join us:
Our Saturday plan is still on. Visit the car/air museum, winery, some bowling, lunch and then check in at the hotel and then dinner Saturday evening. We can all meet at The Saltbox Country Store on Saturday AM.
On Sunday, if we leave the hotel by 8 AM for the show and plan to leave the field by noon and go directly home, I believe we should be able to beat the storms. Of course we could always leave the field earlier for home
We would like to hear from you so please post your intentions or email George, who’s at home waiting to compile the list of those coming and post it.
Finally, For those who would be driving long distances i.e. NY and Canada, we understand it if you do not come. We’ll see you in June at the Portland, CT and Concord, NH shows anyway.

That's OK Claude. There is probably a lot of snow falling in Vermont and the roads probably won't be totally clear for a couple of days.
The only reason we can continue with the show is that we only got rain down here and the roads should be clear by tomorrow.

John,
Thanks for re-posting those pictures from 2 years ago! Wish that could be this weekend. Although Grant and I are only 1 hour away, I wont be coming down due to the weather. The little guy is disappointed and since I have not seen any of you for two years, I am also disappointed. George, I'll keep an eye out on other gatherings to attend. Unfoutunately I'll be on vacation again this year during the Portsmouth show, but will look for other opportunities to show up. In the mean time I hope all of you that do show up this weekend enjoy yourselves and lets hope next year is sunny and warm and we can break the T-bird attendance record of year's past.

(and anyone else who was hoping to go to the Fitchburg show on Sunday, but is now thinking of canceling due to weather)
You are welcome to join us on Saturday with or without the Bird. Our free tour of the Collings Foundation car/airplane museum is going to be great.
We are meeting on Saturday morning between 9 and 10 AM at:
The Salt Box Country Store
626 Main St.
Bolton, Ma. 01740
(978) 779-5023
That is just off I-495 in Bolton. We will caravan from there over to the car museum in Stow.
We should be done with the tour by sometime just after noon. If you have other commitments on Saturday, you can leave to go home from there, if not, you're invited to continue on our caravan cruise for the rest of the day, stopping at a Winery for wine tasting and a free picnic lunch, candlepin bowling, and an Ice Cream stop.

He was also taken by the micro cars and wish he had one.

Gee, no one asked so I'll tell you all:
Saturday was a great day, planned by Wes. We met at the Saltbox Country Store in the AM and had breakfast together.
Seven (7) TBirds shopwed up: cho143, Bird03, MATBird, Chuck, Nicky-the-squid, 02Leebird and witchcitybird.
Those there without Birds were Blue Heaven, Sweet T, Doris and Czar-Bird with his son Grant
The weather cooperated, although it was cool.
The museum was a big hit at both the hanger and the car barn
Onto a Winery where we ate a picnic lunch outside, as supplied by Wes. And then inside for a tour and wine tasting
Then we went bowling where, as usual I didn't do so well. Too much competition on the high end.
The evening dinner was equally great - Another primo place picked by Wes.
Sunday morning brought us all downstairs early, for breakfast, only to find the rains approaching.
There were many vendors on the field, since they come in around 6AM, but no show cars and sprinkle of rain. So we extended our breakfast while the rains increased and then left for home.
By the time I left around 9:30 AM, the field was all but empty.
Let's all hope next year we have better luck. Certainly this year had the makings of a great turnout, before mother nature started to interfere:)
Hopefully people will post whatever pictures they got. I know Grant would like to see one of him by those race cars if anyone has one.
Thanks to all who attended!! And welcome to "our New England nest" Peter, (cho143) it was a pleasure to meet you. Gee I hope I didn't miss anyone:)

At the Collings Foundation Airplane and Car Museum we first toured the large modern hanger that housed aircraft, microcars, indy racers, sprint cars and midget racers.
1. Bob Collings talks about the 1909 Bleriot XI a similar plane to the one that Louis Bleriot used when he was the first man to cross the English Channel in an airplane.
2. Reproduction of the original 1909 Wright Glider.
3. This is a 1911 Wright Flyer EX built by the Wright Brothers. The Wright "Vin Fiz" won acclaim with Calbrath Perry Rodgers at the controls as being the first aircraft to cross the American continent. Not an easy journey by far, plagued by breakdowns and crashes, almost all of the parts of the entire airplane had to be replaced during the trip and Rodgers broke most of his limbs and collarbone during the flight. This was also one of the first examples of corporate sponsorship as the "Vin Fiz" company financed the journey to promote their grape-like drink.

1. PT-17 Stearman Trainer.
2. Replica of a Fokker Dr-1 Triplane, which was made famous by the Red Baron (Baron Manfred von Richthofen) the leading ace of WWI. Bob is telling us about how, since the aircraft used Castor Oil for combustion, that after a few minutes of inhaling the exhaust, the pilots……well…..they kind of needed to go!!!
3. Grumman TBM Avenger a carrier-based torpedo bomber. Bush number One flew this aircraft in WWII, was shot down and rescued at sea.

Big thanks to George for his arrangements with the hotel, the hours and hours of PMs, emails, and phone calls he put in getting the word out about the show (not only to the regular members, but to people that don't visit the site often enough to know what's going on and to other people that aren't even members), and for helping me with everything that I was doing.

Barbara,
Yes Grant is looking for a pic with the micos. I remember Terry took one and maybe she will post.
The weather looks wonderful this weekend. In fact I took a vacation day for Monday as it is going to be near 80. The bird will be coming out. Put full insurance on it and Grant is ready to go for a ride. All you guys and gals, enjoy the weather, top down.

Steve,
There is a car show this weekend at the Merrimac College in Andover, Ma on Sunday between 11 and 3PM. It's a newer show and I haven't been there so I can't give you any description of it.

I can't go as I'm working until 3PM that day, but other members could possibly be going.

Wes, I talked to a guy who went sunday. Said they had over 300 cars there and plenty of trophies. 5 bucks to get in.
He also told me the Village Inn in Danvers will not be hosting tuesday nights

I'll be at Liberty Tree tomorrow.
I'll swing by Village Green on my way home today and see if they know where the Tuesday night cruise will end up.
