Thunderama 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New England's Vintage Thunderbird Club will be hosting the 16th annual Thunderama at Canterbury Shaker Village in Canterbury, NH. A Thunderbird Concours with "fun" judging will be held in addition to an All Makes Vehicle Show at the same time.
The event will be held on June 15, 2008 on the village green of the Shaker Museum. This location is just 20 minutes north of Concord, NH which has many attractions nearby. It is also only a 45 minute drive to the NH seacoast and the Kittery malls.
This will be the largest gathering of Thunderbirds in the northeast for 2008. The area will hold upwards of 250 cars. The Shaker Museum will provide 2 free tickets (a $30 value) to their museum that encompasses 634 acres with over 25 buildings to tour. The Shaker Table Restaurant, Summer Kitchen and an outdoor grill are availabe for food.
NEVT welcomes all "Retro" 'Birds and looks forward to working with TBN members again in the judging of these cars.
Make plans now to attend this fun and relaxed day!

Thanks for posting Don, as well as the invitation.
This may be our 4th year, but need to double check our schedule. Dino may have committed us to the Connecticut benefit event for that same weekend.
However, people are certainly free to attend whichever venue fits them. If we are split up, I'll need to help you set up the judging for those who do attend and hopefully get you the numbers of attendees before you purchase the trophies.

Thanks for posting this. True it is only early November but at dinner last night over a couple glasses of a fantastic red wine my wife & I began talking about what & where we would like to travel to next year.
We have never been as far east as the New England States. This event looks like it could be one of the best reasons to come and see it all. And what a great way to meet a whole bunch of TBNers.
I have & will be following this thread, as the calendar moves on into 2008 we will be making our plans. What a cruise that will be for us!

Mike, you and Evelyn might just see us again. We're seriously thinking about planning a vacation around this event. Margaret has already obtained all the info to take Amtrak from here to Boston (a two day trip), rent a Mustang convert (hopefully) and drive the short distance to Concord.
We'll probably spend some time searching for cemeteries from the early days of America. My family tree goes back to that area, so it would be neat to find an ancestors grave.
When we make a definite decision, we'll probably be calling on you New Englanders for ideas and suggestions for us to get the most out of this trip.
Like Mike, we'll keep an eye on this thread.

Sixpack,
It would be really great if you and Magaret could make it up for this.
Keep in mind that the Hertz location at Boston's Logan Airport rents Hertz Shelby Mustangs. They are a little bit pricey, but totally worth it. One of their restrictions is that you have to have an airline ticket into and out of Boston (they don't want to rent to locals, only tourists..I don't know why...maybe they think that tourists won't beat on them like locals would). Anyway, I think that they might go along with an Amtrak ticket as proof. If you are interested, I would call them directly at 617-569-7272 and also mention that you are a car enthusiast and are taking the car to a Ford show.
We will be planning events for Friday afternoon and dinner Friday night (for people that will be travelling distances and want to stay over Friday night). The rest of the group will be up on Saturday morning to start an all day cruise with dinner in the evening. Sunday morning will be the show and most people will leave for home from there, but a few of us stop for dinner before leaving for home.
Hope to see you both there,
Wes

That is exactly what happened back in '66 the first time Hertz ran this program. It's not quite as easy this tiome around. One of the guys I work with rented a Shelby last year. The engine and nearly every removable component has a lanyard with a serial number on it. You sign off on the seals and numbers before taking the car. If any of the seals are cut when you return the car...you in trouble!!!!

I guess it's worth it for Hertz going thru all that hassle of protecting the car? What is the benefit for Hertz to rent the Shelby anyway? Do that many people look to rent something like that?

I don't know if they have more than one Shelby at Logan Airport, but I have tried to rent one several times and they were never available. I used to have a contact there (the bf of a woman I know), but they broke up and I'm still good friends with her, but not with him.

(We all go to Skip's Drive-in Megacruise...usually the Saturday after the 4th of July.....they aren't committed to that date yet, but I will post it as soon as they announce.........also we go to Kimball's Farm Ice cream cruise nights on Thursdays.)

Update info - I was in touch with Don this morning and he said that they have a special person coming to the Canterbury show, this year, in his newly restored 1955 Thunderbird.
It is the Port Authority patrolman that was the last person pulled from the wreckage on 9/11. The movie "World Trade Center" was his story.

Friday June 13th and Saturday June 14th

Glad you a Jeanette can make it.
Don Seymore is the president of the New England Vintage Thunderbird Club. They are the hosts of the event and are also providing the group rate at the hotel.
We will be doing our own cruise with our Nest Birds around New England on Saturday and will meet up with their group on Sunday at the show.
I'll be headed up there on Friday after noon and we'll have a short cruise and dinner that evening with the part of our group that is staying over for 2 nights.
For anyone driving up on Saturday, the all day Saturday cruise will begin promptly at 9:00 AM at the hotel in Concord (so all of you that are driving long distances might want to consider staying over both Friday and Saturday).

Maybe we'll do Kimball's Farm Ice Cream cruise night on Thursday. We usually meet in Littleton Common (Littleton, Ma.) at 5 PM and drive in together. This is weather dependent so if it's a no go we can come up with a place to meet for dinner either Wednesday or Thursday night.

George,
It's not just the price that we have to worry about. Last year the hotel was sold out of non-group rooms BEFORE the ending deadline for the group block of rooms so the only way you could get a room was through the group. When the deadline came for the group rooms the hotel was sold out irregardless of price.
May happen again this year.

I believe that Lenny booked the last room available at the Marriott.
I will call the hotel tomorrow to see if they will add any more rooms to the group, but the chance of that is slim.
I talked to Sal M. tonight, and he and Jo are coming up in the new Lincoln to be with us for the weekend!!!!!! Yeah!!!!!!!
Sal was told that the Marriott was out of rooms so I had him book into the Hampton Inn.
Hampton Inn Bow/Concord
515 South Street
Bow, New Hampshire 03304
1-603-224-5322
AARP rates are $120.60 per night plus tax
AAA rates are $127.30 per night plus tax
Hampton best available rates are $134.00 per night plus tax
If you don't have a room at the Marriott yet, please book into the Hampton Inn so that we don't have people spread all over town at the various Hotels. If we come up with more rooms at the Marriott then you can cancel the Hampton and go with the Marriott, but since rooms seem to be selling out fast in the area it's best if you book the Hampton now just in case they run out too!

I have an outside chance at being tied-up with work for the whole weekend, so I'll just have to cross that bridge when I get to it, but planning on spending the weekend up there with Thunderama.

Hmmmmmmmmm, speaking of Kimball's when are we going to go and need to have QAA there to install Rocker Panels.
Bruce:
QAA does not normally go out do installs. However, in the past Bernie has done me a favor and accepted us into his shop and done them for us there.
If we can get a good count and a couple of dates that are good for everyone, I would be willing to call Bernie and ask if they would be kind enough to once again take us into the shop and do it there.
What I would need are how many Rocker panel sets and whatever other trim people may want installed, as well as the flexible dates.
Based upon discussion at Fitchburg, as I recall, it may be you Wes and Todd for Rockers but not sure whoelse or whatelse. If everyone emailed me their needs I'll collect the data and organize it to conclusion on a Kimball's 2008 thread
Bruce
Apr 30, 2008, 11:35 AM
I would also want rocker panels on the Inca and will be available to do it sometime before proceeding to Kimball's. Never having been to Kimball's Thursday (?) event I don't know if this is possible. Do to the mileage and time, I would like to make one trip to do both.

I think George misread your post with regards to the "Saturday" part of it.
I tried that idea just this week. I asked George to call and see if they would be open or possibly would open up just for us on Saturday.
The answer was no.
So. Back to the Thursday idea which was:
Lunch
Tour QAA and have rockers installed
Attend the Kimball's cruise night
If you want the rockers installed before Thunderama, the only date choices you have are June 5th and June 12th.

Hey guy's ... I think we've hijacked this thread. Back to Thunderama
:backtotop
We need to start a Kimball's thread. In fact if you have a schedule for Kimball's post that and then allow those who want parts installed to post there. Then we can set up a lunch date and I'll ask Bernie when I return later this month if we could possibly get in for some installs. But to be fair, I need to give him enough notice

Sorry Roger. I tried. I placed 2 calls to the group department last week. They went to voice mail and I left a message. The calls were not returned. They are very poor when it comes to service for groups at this hotel. We have also had trouble with them in the past.
The deadline for the group rate is over now as it ran out on May 1st and the website says they are sold out of regular rate rooms on Saturday night.
Anyone else who doesn't have a reservation, book into the Hampton Inn. Sal & Jo will be staying there and we'll make sure that no one misses out on anything just because they aren't staying at the Marriott. The Hampton is just 2 miles South of the Marriott and just off I-93.

It should be ready for this Friday in plenty of time for Thunderama. The Expel is being taken off obviously so that the car can be painted. I just wanted to thank Dino for the wonderful surprise gift of a 1:18 scale Whisper White Bird that he made himself. All I could say all weekend was “unbelievable.” We all know that trying to find a WW 1:18 is hard enough. But when you find one, it costs and arm and leg to buy one….. Dino, took a Black Bird, took it all apart, stripped the black paint off, and painted it WW. That, by itself, had to be quite a chore. But he didn’t stop there. He added a full red accent interior, to match my car, added a chrome hood scoop and rockers and the real stunner, he put a LEEBRD license plate on the back….Unbelievable, what a group of friends we have……
Now, the bidding on eBay will begin……J
Not a chance in the world this car will ever see eBay. This is a treasure that will stay with me and my WW Bird…..Thank you Dino, you are the greatest…..

We also got home safe and sound. It was a great weekend, the show, the cars, the touring, the eating, the laughing but most of all the time spend with friends both old and new. I cant believe that I put almost 1,000 miles on the car this weekend. Wes out did himself again, we toured so many spots its hard to remember them all. Not being able to remember some details comes with being a year older so a special thanks to all for the birthday wishes and the birthday presents. I thank you all we had a great time!!!!!

Just to let everyone know that we made it home Monday late afternoon, though we did have to put our top up for the last 20 miles because it was raining so hard (did do the 30 miles from Washington to Fredericksburg in light rain with the top down).
What a great time Jeanette and I had while visiting with you all. How great you made us all feel -- to be so far from home, and yet it seems like we were from just next door. We truly felt like we were with family!!!!!
Need to mark our calendar for next year. Will post more later, but did want to let you know how thankful we are for the great time (and birthday celebration) you had for us!!!

Final update.....
I received my first publication of the "Bird's Nest" magazine from NEVT, New England Vintage Thunderbirds, and thought I would share some info with you all.
In Don Seymour's President's message, he said that there were 95 cars at Thunderama. In addition, NEVT gained 11 new members. Note: five of those are Retro-Birds. There were three from NH, one from CT (Blue Heaven) and one from MA (MATBird). NOTE: As of today Chuck has just joined and Don informed me that his newsletter is on it’s way to him.
Another article was from Don's talk at the Banquet, about the history of the NEVT. This was the 15th annual Thunderama presented by NEVT, which is 16 years old and dedicated to Thunderbirds from 1955 to present. Thunderama is the largest gathering of Thunderbirds in the Easten U.S.
He noted that cars came from as far away as NC, which was our very own David and Blenda (David Mullis) and VA, which was Steve and Jeanette (js tbird).
There were four color pages of photographs of the show, which included Dino receiving his award, and a wide angle shot of some 16 Retro-Birds with JS Bird out front. There was also a 2" x 3" photo of Doug and Brenda’s, (mintbird), TBird with the hood open displaying a painting of his car, which is part of his hood liner, for shows only under the hood.
In another article, which was on the Topsfield show that followed Thunderama, there is a picture of all types of Thunderbirds. In it are five (5) Retro-Birds. Certainly some of the new birds were from our NE Group.
NEVT has been an excellent partner for the New England TBN group and provided us with an excellent opportunity to get together, arrange tours and attend an excellent show and just enjoy Thunderbirds of all years.
Thanks to Don Seymour and his organization for giving us this opportunity. Possibly, others within our group may want to consider joining NEVT as well.:high5:

That would have been Wes, Nicky, Doug and me. Our friend Dan runs the Topsfield show which we've never been able to make as it usually falls on the same weekend as Thunderama.
The fifth was a gorgeous Cashmere with a custom compartment behind the seats for their dog.
I believe the local chapter meets once a month for breakfast throughout the winter up in your neighborhood George.

To all our TBN friends,
I certainly appreciate all the accolades. The TBN folks are part of our success with the car registrations, ticket sales and general enthusiasm for the show.
We are an independent Thunderbird club not affillated with any of the national clubs. We have found we are able to do most everything the national clubs can do and make the experience taylored for the local folks.
We have a wonderful working relationship with the TBN folks which enhances NEVT. We look forward to making the announcement of Thunderama 2009 on this site soon! For info on NEVT, just email dseymour@worldpath.net.
Thanks for your interest!

Is this the same Lake Winnipesaukee made famous in the movie "What About Bob"?
Jim:
That's is the very same Lake. However, the filming did not take palce on our Winnipesaukee.....
* The movie was filmed in and around the town of Moneta, Virginia located on Smith Mountain Lake. Production had to go south because at the real Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, the leaves were already turning for the fall season.
* The house used in the filming still stands. The exploding house was a prop house built for the explosion on a nearby lake front lot; the local inhabitants gathered to watch the explosion from land and boats.
* The scenes of Bob arriving in town on the bus with his goldfish were filmed in downtown Moneta, which was spruced up and repainted for the movie.
* The local institute which Leo tries to commit Bob in is actually the local Elks Home for retirees in the nearby town of Bedford, Virginia.
* Throughout the film, Leo shows an obsession with Sigmund Freud. He is frequently shown with a bust of the man, and his son is named Sigmund, and his daughter Anna (the name of Freud's daughter)

Just to let you all know, Terry was feeling poorly on the morning of the car show, but seemed to have improved by the afternoon. I heard from her yesterday and she told me that she went to see the doctor on Monday morning and was diagnosed with a severe kidney infection. The doctor wanted to put her in the Hospital, but she convinced him to let her take her medication and rest at home as Roger is back from his trip now.
Hope you feel better soon Terry.
