There has been a lot of talk about the boot that covers the soft top when it is down. If Ford really wanted to have the 2002 be truly retro, why did'nt they have the same type of soft top that the 55-57 bird had. They are real neat. They just fold down and then foward and then are completely stored behind the seat. There is no unsightly boot or any loss of trunk space. Ford was way ahead in 1955

Ford probably figured most of it's customers would be too lazy to want to fool with a top like that. I agree with you though. It was a neat concept that gave the car a more finished look and also didn't eat into the trunk space.

While I agree with you about a manual operated top. I was thinking of an automatic top. After all in 57 58 59 the retractable convs from Ford had one. First the top went up, then part of it folded, then the trunk opened, then the top folded into the trunk. No trunk space, but a retractable hard top. The electronics of today are far superior than those of 50 yeard ago.

Really like the neater look of the old tops with the top out of site. Watched a guy put the top up on his 56 this weekend, I sure am glad mines power!

The one advantage to the power top is 50% less scratches on the rear deck. The 50's style tops mounted in the same manner as the hardtops - that means twice the scratch potential
