View Full Version : October 3 west of DFW area driving tour

Saturday, somewhere out west (of DFW area)
I will need a head count by Thursday October 1. Both of our stops need the count so they will have enough staff on hand to handle us.
We'll gather to meet between 9:00 and 9:30am at TMS. There will be written directions passed out at that time. George suggested that we meet at the ticket office at TMS as their parking lot is always open. The Texas Motor Speedway will be very busy that day as the GoodGuys Hot Rod Show Nationals will be taking place so you'll see plenty of cars worth looking at as you wait for us to gather and depart.
If you're coming in from 114 west bound or off of I35W onto 114 westbound, you'll take a right at the first entrance to TMS on 114, go to the first stop sign, take a right and follow road to the ticket office which is on the left side of the road.
At 9:30 sharp we will go around the track on the north side to get away from the Good Guys traffic and exit out the west entrance, turn right toward Justin. At Justin, we will take a left turn onto HWY 407. Follow George and I in the blue 02. We're heading for our home for a short stop, then we'll be touring the backroads to Bridgeport to arrive at Yesterday's before 11:30 which is our scheduled lunch time.
After lunch we'll head for the Brushy Creek Winery (Alvord address) near Bowie. We'll again be taking backroads.
Brushy Creek is a young winery, growing 36 varieties of wine grape, testing to see which handle their climate the best. In talking with the owner, they are out of most of their sweet wines at this time BUT they are trying out some sparkling wines this year. The sparkling wine is not bottled yet but for a price, we can have samples of it. We will be broken up into small groups for the winetasting because their wine tasting room is small. They may charge a glass fee to taste their wines. (they are a small winery).
Raindate - I have not scheduled a raindate for this event. It will happen rain or shine though the wine tour may be cut out. I'm watching the weather and right now there is a 20% chance of rain on Thursday, two days before the event. Will keep you tuned so you can make a decision.
Remember to give me your RSVP

Dot,
It's kinda iffy for me. Linda's been under the weather. If I can I might meet at TMS, then caravan to lunch, but would have to head back after that.

Weather update:
Latest for Saturday:
A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Partly cloudy, with a high near 73. Southeast wind between 5 and 10 mph.
I checked with the Winery and was told they have put new gravel down (it's not a long driveway) and leveled out the potholes. We should be ok.

Dot,
Is is too late to add a new couple that I met this week? They're names are David and Lea, and they have a Torch Red Thunderbird. Like me they'll be at TMS and the lunch, but have to split after that because of prior commitments.
I'll also send you a PM to make sure you see the request. Many thanks,
James

What a GREAT outing!
Yes, the rain held off until after we left the winery, though it rained on us later. As we were leaving for the Winery from the Diner, motorcylists told of severe storms South of us, so a few of our members left the flock and headed home.
Thanks to Dot and George for a wonderful day!
We visited with old friends, met a lot of new friends,
and
two old friends showed up as a surprise!
Care to guess who??

Since she needs a head count, would you post that you met some new folks with a Torch Red bird that would like to join to fun but they aren't on TBN yet. Tell her we hope to do the whole cruise but there is a chance we may have to leave after lunch. You can call us David and Lea (our middle names).
If you plan on going west to Gainesville then down to TMS, we should be able to meet up with you on Saturday morning as you come by Sadler or Whitesboro.
Hope we can pull this off, should be fun.

Many thanks to George & Dot for an absolutely wonderful Saturday. It was great meeting all the new faces and of course, seeing all of the familiar ones again. I had a wonderful drive up FM 51 from Decatur to Gainesville (sounds like I was in Georgia, don't you think?). As I was taking the ramp from I-35 onto US 82 I got 2 "Thunderbirds Up" from a couple in a topdown Chrysler Sebring Convertible (WITH flashing headlights and blaring horn, to make sure I saw them). How neat is that? Hmmm (pondering). Was it the T-Bird or the cool hat they liked so well?

Thanks for the background on David And Lea. It was quite a surprise! (look for their photo & car in my slideshow link below.)
I've uploaded my photos but unfortunately, I didn't take any photos at our rendevous spot at TMS.
We ended up with 16 cars leaving TMS. While there spotted Pam wandering around TMS trying to find us but she didn't, however she wasn't discouraged and decided to do some cruising in our general direction and we caught up with her at lunch along with Sally. The day started out gorgeous, as Sally says and we all went top down for most of the drive. We had 18 cars and 32 people at Yesterday's, and 13 cars made it out to the winery afterwards. The rain held off til we were all on our way to our homes and it's been raining since. Couldn't have squeezed in the tour any better than that.
Here's the link to the slideshow. http://s245.photobucket.com/albums/gg64/5bird7/TBN/DFW%20Group/?albumview=slideshow You may switch off the slideshow with one of the links in the upper right of that slideshow screen.
Thank you to all who came out for the tour, some for the first time. Great meeting you.

Yes James, it is easier when you have someone else to watch the road while taking pictures. I usually take pictures while we are traveling whether it is in the car or on the Goldwing, and Don takes pictures with his camera when we are stopped.
Dot, we enjoyed your pictures. Wish we could have stayed for the winery leg of the cruise. At least we were able to somewhat experience it through your pictures. Thanks!

You just never know where we might show up! It was great fun to pull a little surprise on our friends in the Texas Chapter. I appreciate James helping with the slight deception. David and Lea sure had a fun time.
Special thanks to Dot & George for be great hosts and setting up a fun day. We we able to get all the way back to my aunt's house in Sadler before it started raining yesterday. Unfortunately, we weren't so lucky today as we traveled mostly in light rain and drizzle as we made our way back to Oklahoma.
It was fun to meet some new folks and great to see that newbies are finding their way to TBN! Missed some of our other North Texas friends like Scott and the Marshalls, Bordens and Sanders (alright Chuck - your name was on the list, just where were you and Nancy?).
We forgot to bring our camera so it is nice to see the pictures that others took.
Another " it's a small world" moment happened when we discovered that James (texasbird) had worked with my cousin who recent passed away from a brain tumor and in fact had attended his funeral that took place while we were in Canada. You just never know how we are going to be connected to our TBN family members.

Thanks for the kind words, Sally. What's funny is that if you look at MY group shot inside Yesterday's Diner, you'll see a shot taken from the end of the looooong table where we were sitting... BUT, if you look at Dot's photos, you'll see me STANDING on the restaurant booth taking those shots. It's kinda like a politician photographed with a drink in his hands or a girl by his side. There's no good explanation for the behavior. :nono:LOL.

Hi all - sorry for the delay. I had a JOB INTERVIEW today!. Seems to have gone well. Will be a couple of weeks they tell me before they make a decision as I was the first interview. The only problem is I am in Plano and the job is in North Fort Worth. 49 miles each way!. Trying to talk them into letting me work out of the house part of the time.
Anyway here is the link - hope it works
Dot and George you both did an OUTSTANDING job with the road trip Saturday. It really made it fun to have a thunderbird. 19 in a row - wonderful beautiful sight! Dot, I had heard about your collection and it is something to behold.
Let me konw if the photobucket does not work - this is my first time.
