Mildred has Breast Cancer again and is tentatively scheduled for surgery Wednesday. She will need and get my undivided attention, so I will be away from TBN until further notice. Ken called a few minutes ago to say that Mildred is out of surgery, and in recovery. All went well, and the family will be able see her in about 45 minutes.

She may be in the hospital for a couple of nights, but definitely tonight. Neither Mildred or Ken got much sleep last night, so it's time for rest and recuperation for the both of them.

She's home!!! The surgery went extremely well. The Doctor released her to come home on the condition that we closely monitor her for any indication of a problem. Our youngest Daughter is a RN student and she is helping us with the things the Doctor wanted. Mildred is doing remarkedly well considering the scope of the surgery. She is very happy to be at home. We want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. It means so much to know so many people "had our backs" during this ordeal. We were humbled by the support you gave. I hadn't heard from Ken and Mildred for a couple of days, so I sent an email.
The Surgeon removed the drain yesterday

Ken wrote back:

Mildred is doing great!! ... but we have been very busy today.
The Surgeon was really pleased with her progress.

Next week we go see the Radiation Doctor and back to the Surgeon for another check up.

All the tests are not back from pathology, so we don't know if Chemo will be needed.

She is one tough little lady.. She has only taken 5 pain pills since the surgery.
She is ready to go back to Hot Springs!!!

Thursday evening, 07/29/2010

Just a quick note to let you know Mildred had a good day. Yesterday we had to go see the Surgeon, it seems they took the drain out a little too early. She was in lots of pain until they relieved the pressure. It was no problem today. We even went to the Little Debbie Bakery store this morning. She made an appointment to get her hair done.

The Pathology reports are still not finished. I'm not sure what the hold up is. The only thing the Surgeon could tell us was that there was "Multiple Tumors" in the right breast. He also set up an appointment with a highly recommended Oncologist from Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga. We will still use the Radiologist that we used in 2006.

Regardless of what we do, it's all in God's hands.
Please continue to pray for us.

Thanks everyone for the prayers and well wishes. Mildred had her best night since the surgery. She seems to be mending well. We got out of the house for a few hours yesterday. She went to the Beauty Shop and the girls there always lift her spirits. I spent my time at Home Depot and Ace Hardware getting materials for a small DIY project.

An update on Mildred
This is from an email I received yesterday (Tues) afternoon

We just came from the Radiologist and he ordered another whole body scan just as a precaution. He will see her again next week and set up her treatments. Tomorrow we get the stitches removed and hope to get more info from the Pathologist. Mildred feels fine, but gets tired easily.

We had a difficult weekend, my Sister's 39 year old Grandson passed away Saturday morning. He had cancer from tobacco use and 15 years of working with drywall and all it's related dust. Of course, Mildred wanted to attend the wake and that seemed to wear her down.

It's hot and humid here. We are under a heat alert until tomorrow evening. The temperature will be about 100°F and the humidity unbearable. No top down riding for a few days.

I am doing OK, just a bit frustrated that I can't do more to solve Mildred's problem. Thanks for being there for us and keep praying. Love, Ken

Mildred went to the Surgeon today and he said everything is healing as well as one could expect. The initial pathology report wasn't what we had hoped for, but it's not as bad as it could have been. They are very optimistic that she will make a full recovery. The Doctors gave us permission to take a short trip to the NC mountains to celebrate our Anniversary. Just getting out of the house for a few hours should make her feel better. It's about a 3 hour drive to Harrahs in Cherokee, so those that knows Mildred's skills at slot machines can guess where we will be tomorrow!! At least it will be a good boost for her morale.

Hi Y'all!

I just got off the phone with Ken and Mildred. She's doing very well, all in all. The Chemo effects are not that bad, and she hasn't lost any hair, although it is getting darker. Ken says he has to slow her down, and that occasionally she gets tired. Her appetite is good.

They went for a topless ride this morning, and really enjoyed it.
Ken hasn't spent a lot of time online, and both Ken and Mildred want me to thank you all for your continued prayers and positive thoughts.

This is part of an email I received mid-week

"Just a quick note to update you on Mildred. She contracted a strep infection and her chemo treatment has been temporarily suspended. She is feeling better today, but she was very sick from Friday until now.They gave her antibiotic IV's Friday and she has been on strong antibiotic pills since then. She is responding well to the treatment and except for minor stomach discomfort she had a good day.

Now for the rest of the story!!! I had a CT scan of my carotid arteries last week and I have extensive blockage in the left artery. I have an appointment with the surgeon Friday to discuss scheduling surgery. Since I have no symptoms, I plan to delay the surgery until Mildred finishes her chemo.

We've talked on the phone a couple of times since Ken's email, and here's an update,as of last night (Friday).

Mildred has lost about 15 ibs, and is beginning to lose her hair. She spent last weekend in the hospital, due to the strep infection, the need for IV's, and an extensive related body rash. The Dr has taken her off one of the stronger anti-biotics, and her stomach is not quite as upset as it had been. Her appetite is good, and Ken is pushing her to eat.
She still has unexpected drainage from her mastectomy site.
She is shopping for a suitable, pleasing wig.
Mildred's chemo treatments have been temporarily suspended while the Dr.'s stabilize her current medical issues.

Ken has a 95% blockage in his left carotid artery. He has not experienced any symptoms, and has talked the surgeon into waiting on his surgery, until Mildred is doing better. He is being closely monitered by his surgeon.

Ken had corrective surgery on his left carotid aretery about 6 years ago. He did have symptoms at that time, so he knows what to look for. The Dr. and he have an agreement that should any symptoms occur, he will immediately notify the surgeon.

Ken's primary reason for delaying his surgery is that he needs to be able to drive Mildred, and himself to thier medical appointments.

Please know that both Ken and Mildred are in good spirits, and have very strong Faith in our Lord.
Up until the last couple of weeks, they both exercised daily, and are in relatively good physical condition.

Please keep Mildred and Ken in your daily Prayers, and send your love, and positive energy to them.

Went out and got the paper about 6:00 this morning. It was in it's normal plastic bag, but had a strange color to it.

I talked with Ken and Mildred yesterday, and they wanted me to tell all of you how much they appreciate everyone keeping them in thier prayers.

Mildred's strep infections cleared up, and she has resumed the chemo treatments. She hasn't felt well the past couple of days (due to the chemo), but tests show no cancer hot spots!!

Ken is scheduled mid-December for his carotid artery procedure. He still doesn't have any symptoms, but he's having it done as a precautionery measure.

They're just about ready for Halloween Trick or Treater's...this is just about thier favorite Holiday. They just love the children in thier costumes. They have more than 120 goodie bags ready, and are working on more.
Ken says that they ran out by 7 PM last year!
Mildred's Witch costume is at the ready for Sunday...

I talked with Ken yesterday.

Mildred had a hard time last week. When she went in for Chemo, her red cell count was down. She required 2 units of whole blood. Think Ken said they went in at 10 AM, and didn't get back home till 2 AM the next morning, She's doing better, now, but they're both pretty tired.

Ken is still scheduled for his carotid artery procedure mid-Dec.

Both of Ken and Mildred appreciate your prayers and support so very much.

I spoke with Ken Tuesday on the phone, and wanted to let you know that Mildred was in the hospital again. She was admitted on Friday. Ken has been staying at the at her bedside day and night.

As of Tuesday, she has required three units of blood, and underwent a battery of tests.
The Dr's think they've found the source, and are treating her for it.

Drainage from her recent mastectomy continues, and they tryin to clear that up, too. During this stay, in the hospital, a specialist checked her out, and hopefully, will treat the wound in an more effective manner, and hopefully the drainage will abate.
The good news is that Milfresd's appetite, and her color is back.

Ken has postphoned his coratid artery procedure until Mildred is in better shape physically. He hasn't posted much here, but is keeping up with TBN with limited WIFI service at the hospital, but they shut the service off without notice, so it's difficult to post.

Please continue to pray for our dear friends, Mildred and Ken.

We are back home and Mildred is doing well. She seems to feel better now than she has in several months. She said she loves her T-bird family and thanks for all the prayers and positive thoughts.
(We woke up to 9°F this morning!!!)

Thanks, Claire. Mildred is making great progress now that the chemo is finished. She will likely start radiation treatments next month. She is really upbeat now that her hair is coming back. The last two weeks she has felt better than anytime since July. We appreciate all the support from you and all our TBN family.

I am scheduled for surgery on my carotid artery tomorrow morning. The last test indicated 95% blockage. Mildred has improved to the point that I feel comfortable having the surgery now. If all goes well, I will be home sometime Friday.
As the old TV commercial said.. "Thanks for your support." Ken

Keeping you in my prayers, Ken. George went thru that surgery a couple of months ago. He was home the next day, doing fine. His had also progressed from 75% blockage to 95% blockage in just 5 weeks.

I talked with Mildred, and their daughter last evening, and Ken came through the surgery just fine. He had eaten dinner, and taken a little something for a headache.

He was in ICU for the night, and they wouldn't let Mildred stay with him. So, she and Kim spent the night in the Family Waiting Room.

I tried to call the cell this morning, and their home phone this evening.
Still haven't reached them...I should have asked for the name of the hospital.

Kim, their daughter, just called, and told me Ken is doing pretty well. He's eating, and he's teasing her a little bit.

The Dr. decided to hold him one more night for observation. He's out of ICU, and Mildred will be staying with him tonight.

Mildred had a very good week. Monday the Radiation Doctor released her and Wednesday the Oncologist gave her an appointment for July 27th. He indicated that she would be released at that time if nothing new developes.
We can't thank you enough for your prayers and support during this ordeal.
