View Full Version : Hmmm... about that blue...

Not to start a fight here<grin>, but I went to the dealership fully intending to buy a "blue" car. My grandfather had a T-bird somewhere in the 1963-5 range in a light silvery blue with a white top... a really cool car. I'd hoped that was "T-bird blue." I was disappointed to see that it's not really blue, it's a kind of sea-foam green. A nice color, to be sure, but not what I expected. (An INTERESTING color in that different lights change its color -- I saw one in a parking lot once and under fluorescents it actually DOES look blue!)

Anyway, I went for the white. Hope they come out with my grandfather's blue one day... from the paint chip that I saw at the dealership next year's "blue" is only a few ticks closer to blue than this year's blue.

Those '02 blues sure look nice with the white top, though!

My dad had a 1965 Custom 2 door, and it was Silver Blue...the other shade of blue that year was Dark Caspian Blue.

I liked the color of the car, but the paint gave every manufacturer a fit. It was very prone to pop off in large flakes. Our Custom did it, a teacher at my high school had a 1966 Mercury Monterey that suffered the same problem, and I remember some GM products that had the same fate.

The '02Blues with blue tops are da bomb, too!:biggrin::pbj:

For those who are interested in 1963 Ford ran a color on the T-bird called "Patrician Green" it is an exact match to the new T-bird blue.

It is interesting in the '60's Ford changed back and forth with its Turq. colors calling them blue then green and back to blue again - I'll scan a post a sales brochure shot from '63 of the "Patrician Green" convertible - It is really sharp!

Sorry... I meant to put this in the color thread. Didn't mean to start a whole new thread.

"Patrician Green..." I like it. Beats "Thanks Vermillion," one of my least-favorite names for a paint. (Maverick, somewhere around the late 70's.)

You know Ford had a whole series of those crazy color names in the early 70's for Pintos Mavericks and Mustangs....

Thanks Vermillion, Freudian Gilt, Cinnamon stick, you know - it is almost nausiating to discuss them now....

And you know they were some of the ugliest colors Ford ever applied to cars!

You know a cool T-bird color from the 60's I would LOVE to see on the new birds is EMBERGLO - Especially with a parchement colored removable top and white or parchment interior.....

I think that would be a real eye catcher!

Way to go FordMan7. I have a 66' Bird I am restoring. It is Wimbldon White with Emberglo interior. When I finish it will be Emberglo interior, Emberglo exterior with parchment vinyl roof.:fordsrule::thumbsup:

I know it is a little late - but here is a shot from the 1963 Ford Buyers Guide showing a '63 Patrician Green Convertible (Patrician Green is an exact match to the new Thunderbird Blue).

This was the first time the color that is now known as T-bird blue was used by FoMoCo - It was one of three colors that were exclusive to the Thunderbird in '63!

Was Patrician Green a semimetallic paint like Thunderbird Blue? If not, it probably didn't have the same color-changing properties. Would love to see a photo of the two side by side.

The color chip is an exact match (metallic as well) - it has the same - blue to green color changing characteristics (these colors were very popular in the early '60's) I have had the opportunity to park the new bird next to a '63 in patrician green and it is right on the money!!!

I will take a digital shot of the chip card from my '63 dealer color and upholstery selector book on the 2002 bird and attach!
