WASHINGTON, OREGON, PACIFIC NORTHWEST, AND ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED.

Who would be interested in having a get together this summer some time at the coast?

Possibly Seaside, Cannon Beach, or Long Beach.

The exact location or date is still undecided. We can work the details out.

I'm the "1" vote as we'll be up there mid to late August.

Dot,

That is the approximate time frame that would work best for me as well.

I am on a wait and see mode right now, I would feel guilty coming down by myself and the other alternative is to ride the bike and let Karen and Kim come down in the bird.

I hope we can make this work! My avatar photo was taken at my parent's house in Warrenton so that area would work perfectly for me. With enough warning we can make just about any date.

Well Bryan, Karen, Kim and two more of my girls are going down to Garden Grove and the surrounding area's on the 16th. We will leave as soon as I get off work and we should be able to make Roseburg Friday night then on to Los Banos the next night, I think we will make it to Garden Grove by 3 PM and check out the sights before we spend the next two days at Disneyland; on the way home we will go up 5 to Williams, CA. for one night before we head over 20 to 101 and the RedWoods for a night at the Trees of Mystery, then we should be able to make it home the next day, friday, unless we decide to hang out another night somewhere.
Anyway, that pretty much sums up why I have a hard time getting to some of the things we all want to do together as a group, I really hate to do anything and not include my family. I guess we just need a couple more new Thunderbirds, heh heh then we could have our own club.
BTW...Happy Easter

I figured Bryan needed time to get married and get back from his honeymoon and all that stuff and then he might be ready to help us figure out where and when we should get together. Places tend to book up in August so I'm thinking we should get on it!

I don't really know places to book over on the coast. Anyone have any good ideas or other suggestions?

I guess we can't count on Birdwings to join us from Seattle!

After we get back from Disneyland I am going to try and get with Bryan and whoever else wants and talk over some getting together plans; I don't think I will be able to do much that requires an overnight trip for a while due to a big push on our schedule at work. We have been undergoing some pretty drastic up grades to our flight simulator for several months now and we start training crews on the 17th of may; it is going to be VERY busy there for quite some time. I will be getting time off but it will not be forcasted very well and hard to plan due to that.
I think Bryan is back from his honeymoon and he will be here to have a say on whats going on I am sure.

Hello all. I am sorry I have not been posting much. With overtime and business issues, my time has been limited.

I think the first items that we need to discuss is the exact weekend that would work for everyone and a good coastal location that is a good centralized area.

Dot, you implied August would be a good time for you as you and George will be comming up then?

If we were going to make a weekend of it (which I personally would like to do) we need to really get things rolling as Catbyrd had a good point, things are booking up.

Who would be interested in helping me plan this event? I value everyone's suggestions and opinions. I am quite inexperienced to all of this planning stuff.

What are your opinions and suggetions?

Thank you, and again, I appologize for the delay in postiong to this thread.

Bryan, I won't be much help on the planning part as we will be real busy at the simulator after we get back up and running with the new mods; I will be working just about every Saturday during the summer it looks like. I think you can relate to all that.
I will make an honest effort to at least show up on one of the days.

There are a number of rooms available at the Canon Beach Hotel and their related Inn called The Hearthstone for the weekend of August 20th & 21st. (The third Inn called the Courtyard is pretty much booked that weekend).
They recommended that we avoid the weekend of August 27th and 28th as there is a Hood to Coast race that weekend and most places have a three- night minimum that weekend and the prices also go up.

See attached link and let me know what you think:

Hey Bryan you're alive. I thought Margee Lee(SP) had you under wraps. Glad she has let you come up for air. I like how you tried to cover it with "...overtime and business issues...".

Would like to help but just can't. Still waiting to break open that bottle of Tequila with you though!!

Todd,

Seriously, Over and above the O.T., someone broke into our 10X20 storage unit and cleaned it out. We discovered this right when we got back from DT. We have been up to our ears with police reports and inventory lists. In the process of moving what very little was left, we discovered they also broke into our huge storage compartment of out 5th wheel and stole all of our camping gear and RV essentials--not to mention destroying a door latch in the process.

Now, we are back to more inventory lists, and trying to find a new place to store that.

I am afraid to even call my insurance agent about the coach for fear of being cancelled or having my rates sky rocket beyond reason.

This is what I meant by the "business issues"

Catbyrd, excellent suggestion. I am all for it. I totally agree with you about the H-to-C weekend. It is a total nightmare during that time. However, the weekend of Aug. 7th, 14th, or 21st would work great.

It is kind of difficult to find a reasonable place near Cannon Beach that would accomodate all of us and is comfortable.

I have also found a place. The Ocean Lodge. It is very nice, but is a little pricey. the website is: www.theoceanlodge.com .

This is a beautiful place. I have a stack of brochures and maps on how to get there. They are linked to the Stephany Inn at Cannon Beach. We may get a special rate if there is enough interest. The prices range from $229 to $289 depending on ocean front or not. There are 4 different suites to choose from, and they all fall within that price range.

Like I said, it we can make this work, I will throw out some more ideas and really fun things to do.

Please, let me know as I am unsure of the availabilities, and we need to start planning.

Bryan, so sorry to hear about your break in, I will be coming down that way this weekend and I can stop by if you need any moral support, I really hate to see things like that happen, I have experienced it only once but that was enough.

May 7, 2004, 01:20 PM
Bryan, I'm sorry to hear about what you've been dealing with. That's no fun at all!

I was thinking that Dot & George might be up the last part of August (rather than the first part, but I may be wrong), so that's why I was looking more at the weekend of the 21st. I just called the place you suggested to inquire about availability and they indicated that there was a 3-night minimum stay required and that the cheaper rooms were already booked, so they had only 6 total rooms available that weekend from $249 to $289 per night.

Any thoughts/preferences/other places to recommend by anyone who is planning to attend?

I think we can make any of the weekends in August. The Cannon Beach area is a favorite of ours though the rooms are always very spendy in the summer. Given that my parents are in Warrenton, I would plan on actually sleeping at their house but could spend the rest of the time with the group.

How many folks can we pull together?

GordanL
May 10, 2004, 03:58 PM
I would also stay with my aunt and uncle in Oceanside and drive up to Cannon Beach for events. The rent is free, the view is on the beach and the drive to Cannon Beach is beautiful. I bet that if we got up early enough into Cannon Beach that we could take all of the parking spots on main street before the community knew what hit them

I agree that that's rather spendy - we wouldn't be able to do those rates. Have to check club calendar for what we're doing while we're up there.

Dot,

Nothing is set in stone. I would not think of initiating any plans. I was just tossing out some suggestions in hope for some input on our get together.

Possibly. Long beach might be a better place to have the get together. I think the hotel rates are more reasonable.

What would everyone think of Long Beach WA. instead?

Catbyrd
May 15, 2004, 10:33 PM
Here's another link showing rates at various places in Cannon Beach. (I'm not sure if they have all updated their rates for this year, but it gives you an idea. There are a lot of places that appear to be quite reasonable:

http://www.cannonbeach.org/members/lodging.html#bnb

The following is a link to prices in Long Beach (you need to scroll down to see the various rates)

http://funbeach.com/lodging/hotelmotelcottage.html

The International Kite Festival is going on the weekend of the 20th and 21st in Long Beach so a lot of places have three night minimums or are already booked. I will keep calling places though.

Long Beach is closer for us which is a plus. Cannon Beach is perhaps more scenic.

May 17, 2004, 02:39 PM
hmm - I'm going to throw this in though it's not as central as what you're looking at. We'll be heading for WA from TX mid August.

On August 22, there will be an All Thunderbird Picnic at Glacier View Park in Eatonville, WA. This is close for the Seattle & Tacoma area residents but fairly far for the Oregon residents for a day trip. It's a potluck affair for the food conscious person.

It's hosted by the Olympic Classic Thunderbird Club of which we are members. It's most likely that George & I will be going there as it'll be the only time we'll get to see those club members while we're up there.

The following weekend - August 28, our son will be getting married. We won't be staying much longer than that.

We've stayed in the Long Beach area before (our May 2002 Calendar pic was taken near Long Beach). Those rates look more reasonable to us so if you choose that area to stay in, George & I may be able to figure out how to do both events that weekend - unless you want to opt for the picnic instead.

The Long Beach area has plenty of places for touring with the cars plus it's not that far to cruise down to Cannon Beach and/ or visit Tillamock or visit the air ship museum or visit any other sight in that area.

SKIPIFE
May 24, 2004, 09:12 PM
OK Dot please keep us up to date on your trip up here, I like your tour ideas if we stay at Long Beach, Tillamook is great for ice cream and the airship museum is interesting also.
The Eatonville picnic is also a nice idea, do you think the club would mind if we crashed their picnic?
Whatever happens with my work schedule I will at least try to make an appearance to meet everyone.

5bird7
May 24, 2004, 10:09 PM
Skip, the club would have no problem with it as it's open to ALL Thunderbirds and the club is the host. It is potluck so I'll keep this group up to date on the activity.

Skip, I won't be getting any notice on times until their July or Aug. newsletter comes out but I'll do some checking on the times for their past picnics.

checked - past times have been from 11am to 4pm
potluck - bring your favorite covered dish, salad, or dessert to share
bring your own table service ie plates, cups, knives, forks, spoons

There will be soft drinks, coffee and water provided.

Shame on me...I should have posted all that here on this thread sorry about that; I just sorta figured this is a small forum and we all see each of them anyway.
We have a tentative plan to meet at the Starbucks at SR-512 and I-5 on SouthTacoma Way just south and west of that intersection, across the street from the McDonalds. From there I can lead us through some of the back roads to Eatonville and the picnic.
We should try to set a departure time 10 or10:30 AM from the Starbucks for an arrival time of 11:30 or so if you want to arrive a little later that would be fine with me, we can be very flexible with the time but I would really like to get there no later than noon.
It should take just under an hour to get to the Starbucks from Kirkland, 40 minutes from Enumclaw and an hour and a half from Kelso; If Dot and George come from Lynwood it would also take them about an hour to get to the Starbucks.
This is at the Exit 127 from I-5, go West and then turn South on South Tacoma way to get to the Starbucks, it used to be a Burger King.
For more info on how to get there PM or e-mail me.
I am open to other suggestions so speak up and let everyone know what you think about this plan.
remember...RIDGED FLEXIBILITY...is the rule

Martin,
Checked out www.nwtbirds.com and it looks like a fun event. Do you have to be a member of the Vintage Thunderbird Club to participate and also do you have to attend all five days? I was thinking that this event might work for some of the California group if we attended the last few days. Don't know how much interest there is from the California group, but this can be discussed further once we have more information. Also are any of the California group interested in going?

I'll certainly need a road trip by then. Do we have to belong to VTCI to participate as Red T-Bird has asked? I'm not sure of my schedule at that time, but I'll go if I can arrange it.

Boy am I tempted !!! We moved from The Portland area in 86 and go back all the time by air. I suggested this to my wife and was told do I really want to put that many miles on my bird. I wish you all to have a great time as the West Coast is great. You don't know how much difference there is between the east coast and the west coast. However we love both. If you don't have a diffident choice think of Gold Beach.
