View Full Version : Premium Fuel @ $2.29, Did I Just make a mistake?

No definitely not, my wife and I just love our new 03 triple black premium, and such a deal. This was a new 03 that the largest Ford dealer in the US had for almost one year. We got a little more than $10,000 of MSRP. That put the selling price in a different league. I thought it is a lot of car for the money.
I have been following this site for about a week when I wanted to find out more about the newest TBird/ everyone seems so helpful. Now if it ever stops raining, we can put some more miles on it.

Here in the Texas Panhandle in Amarillo, Premium has gone to $2.09.9 but luckily for me diesel fuel is still down to 1.66.9 My wife has to deal with the gas price. As for the T-Bird it is 31 months old and lacks 40 miles from hitting 5,000 miles so gas has not really been an issue with it.

I agree with JoAnne It is worth the cost. There is nothing that makes my day go better than dropping the top and dring home from a hard day at the office. you could mix your gas about half and half, Premium and mid grade to save a little but for the pennies you save it is not worth the loss of performance. By the Way Jonanne Tbirds Thunderbird cruise will be May 26th.

Yes, even in my beloved state of Georgia where gas has always been a bargain compared to the rest of the country, I am now paying over 2 dollars a gallon. I keep telling myself it could be worse, and since mine is a daily driver, I try not to let it get below a half tank - psychologically, it seems cheaper! Were it not such a fun car, I would feel sick! In spite of all the recent bad press lately about the Thunderbird, it still makes me smile and I still love the experience. It's funny, the owners love them, the press berates them - I'll go with the owners.

Premium is at 2.05 here. We were in Nevada and Arizona a few weeks ago and it was already 2.25 there, no telling what it is now.
It looks like we may need long-term financing for gasoline in the near future!

Filled up the bird yesterday at Cosco @2.31 per gal. Stopped by this morning to fill up the other car and it had gone up another 3 cents. It went up last week 10 cents.

Its better not to look. Just put it on the speed pass and pay the bill once a month, that way you only get upset once a month and not every couple of day.

I'm with Hank on this one...I simply pull in and fill my tank. I've got to have it...the oil companies know it...and there's very little to anything I can do about it. Just hoping the hydrogen technology catches up with the need for a change!

It's @ $2.03 here in Birmingham. I was taking the Bird to Atlanta last weekend so I waited to get gas until I crossed the border into GA...where the taxes are supposed to be a lot lower. I paid $2.03.:cussing:

You need to come back down to the Bay Area ... gas is about $1 cheaper. Course that Woodland Cosco is closer to you.

I read today in the Wall Street Journal that some forecasters are thinking $3 per gallon average (thats for regular gas) for the US by late summer. Seems that the economy is picking up a lot faster than anyone (especially the OPEC boys) thought. Demand is high in U.S., India, and China.

We are hovering at the $2 mark, some stations a penny or so under, some a penny or so higher.
We use gas cards for convenience, and it takes the sting out not to pay in cash and watch that being depleted. I just pay once a month and try not to look at it too closely.
What else can you do? Gotta go to work, and gotta drive the TBird!
We should all be thankful that we are still able to pay it. I don't see how some people around here are able to.

Out here in the Mohave desert (Lake Havasu City, AZ), we're paying almost $3.00/gallon for Chevron Supreme, so $2.29 doesn't sound unreasonable at all!
Try taking your boat out for the day (Two 55 gallon tanks) burning Chevron Supreme! Makes filling up the car sound cheap!

Silicon Valley is now running $2.39 at Arco and $2.41 at Shell. Haven't driven by the Chevron yet, but they are about 2-3 cents higher generally.
TV posted the averages for CA. Santa Barbara was the highest at $2.39 for regular. SF is next at 2.33. Sacramento was the lowest at $2.18; looks like the pols are getting a break. Interesting, since the gas must come from the same refineries around the north side of the bay. However, the Central Valley is judged to be cleaner (NOT true any more) so the gas formulation is a little cheaper.

I just bought my T-Bird. In the specs on Ford web page for it, it says fuel - Regular. Under the gas cap it says 91+. Which is it?

91 octane..........regular here is $1.98

Aug 5, 2004, 09:08 AM
In the my owner's manual, page 170, the reccomended grade is 91 or higher. On page 187 are the engine specs, where the fuel octane rating of 91 is listed as required. The compression ratio is 10.75:1--fairly high. That is the reason to use 91+ octane fuels. Do a search about fuel grade, there was a discussion about what would happen if lower grade fuels were used. If everything works right, here is the link: http://www.thunderbirdnest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2054&highlight=Octane+Rating. Although the computer may keep the engine from knocking (as would happen in the old days) performance will be degraded with lower octane.

Here in Silicon Valley the price of gas seems to be all over the map. Lowest right now is Arco at $1.999 for regular and $2.219 for 91 octane (Arco seems to go up by 11 cents per grade rather than 10). I have seen as high as $2.299 for regular around the Peninsula at other stations in the last couple of days.

Here in Joisey Mobil was selling high-test for $2.05 yesterday. Guess there's an advantage to living near (no, not next to) a refinery (TOSCO). Smile, it's gonna get worse. Crude hit $44/bbl. this week. Hey, if you can afford a $40,000 car, you can pay for the gas!!!

We Floridians do get a break once in a while. With the 8 cents a gallon temporary reduction in price, now is the time to run out and purchase some pre-paid gas cards. I am going to stock up now. Joe, I will give you one as a door prize at the Cruise here in October - the prices will be back up by then and you will have a nice free gift. You can't beat that bargain!

There haven't been any comments on the price of gas recently, even tho' the press coverage indicates that gas prices are at a record high. They may have started down around here. Last Thursday and Friday the prices were from 2.499 (Arco) to 2.539 (Shell) around my house. Today, everyone is 2 cents lower. Here is a link to and article about the price of regular around California. Just to make us feel better, there is the mention of the price of gas in Wailuku, Hawaii. Add 20 to 22 cents per gallon for premium.

Here in Haywood County, Western NC the prices are all over the place!
$1.94/2.04/2.14 and I have also seen $1.99/2.09/2.19 and $2.03/2.13/2.23 so it just depends on where you are in our county! I still think all this gas hype is just awful! Somebody somewhere is making a ton of money!

In Middletown, RI i paid $2.19 for 89 octane. I buy gas all month long on a credit card then send them a check when I receive an invoice and last month I saw a significant jump for one month's worth of gasoline.

Last week it cost $2.399/2.499/2.599 (87/89/91) at the "cheap" stations around Sacramento. Now it seems to be $2.359/2.459/2.559 this week. Costco Gas/Sam's Club Gas are running about 11 cents cheaper than the general market rate.
I find it funny when I hear a news report how the average for regular unleaded gas is now just over $2.00 per gallon and how horrible that situation is for the average consumer. We haven't seen $2.00/gallon in quite some time. During the price "drop" a few months ago, we almost hit a low of $2.049 for regular unleaded.

Yeah, it does cost more to live in Paradise! I guess that is why gas in Hawaii is even higher.
I can't even remember when the price of gas was below $2 around here.

Well, we could eat out at a nice restaurant for what it costs to fill up. But I love my bird so much I don't care. One less meal makes it easier to get in the car. I made a big mistake this last fillup though, I filled up with regular unleaded this last time and you should hear the pinging!!! Hope I didn't hurt anything!
