Feb 7, 2005, 05:48 PM
Thought I'd follow the lead of some of the other state groups and get a roll call going of our active Texas members. The poll is "public" so we know whose in what area so we can plan some activities.
I'm going to divide the state up into areas in the poll as follows.
Panhandle (yelobird2002 has that area under control with his High Plains Thunderbirds based in Amarillo) - covers Lubbock and Amarillo
West Texas - covers the El Paso area (and into New Mexico)
Dallas -Ft Worth covers the surrounding area too. Waco's included
Houston,
Austin and San Antonio
NorthEast Texas covers the Tyler, Longview and Texarkana areas
Abilene area

Please respond below if you're ready to travel or get something going in your area.
(should have started this long ago)

Meanwhile, you might want to subscribe to the Texas forum so you can get daily, weekly or monthly emails when a new thread or message has been posted to this Texas forum.

Abilene is Central Texas? Hmmmm... must have had a lot of seismic activity along Balcones Fault. I'm interested in a get-together in the Dallas, Houston, or Austin/San Antonio areas.

You got me on that one. ;) but think they're closest of the big cities to central Texas.

While we're at this, just want to open the invitation to the Hot Springs weekend in Arkansas at the beginning of April . Redbirdsal and I will be caravaning there from the DFW area.

Dot's right. Abilene was relatively close to "central" Texas...in 1845 when we had parts of Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas and Oklahoma. Dot, you are indeed quite the historian! :first:

Dot,
Don't despair your not alone in this. :smilegrin

Why women can't read maps

MEN frequently despair at women's map-reading skills - or rather their lack of them. Now scientists believe they have pinpointed the reason for this conflict between the sexes.

Researchers say it is all down to differences in the reliance of the sexes on either grey matter or white matter in their brains to solve problems.
They found that in intelligence tests men use 6.5 times as much grey matter as women, but women use nine times as much white matter.

Advertisement:
Grey matter is brain tissue crucial to processing information and plays a vital role in aiding skills such as mathematics, map-reading and intellectual thought.

White matter connects the brain's processing centres and is central to emotional thinking, use of language and the ability to do more than one thing at once.

Professor Rex Jung, a co-author of the study at the University of New Mexico, said: "This may help explain why men tend to excel in tasks requiring more local processing, like mathematics and map-reading, while women tend to excel at integrating information from various brain regions, such as is required for language skills.

"These two very different pathways and activity centres, however, result in equivalent overall performance on broad measures of cognitive ability, such as those found on intelligence tests."

Previous studies have shown that women have weaker spatial awareness than men, making it harder for them to read maps.

Research has also found that in childhood, girls' vocabulary develops more quickly and that in later life women can speak 20,000 to 25,000 words a day compared to a man's 7000 to 10,000.

For the study, published in the online edition of the journal NeuroImage, researchers performed a series of brain scans on 26 female and 22 male volunteers using magnetic resonance imaging equipment.

All the volunteers were in good health, had no history of brain injury and the average IQ scores of the two sexes were similar.

Their brains were scanned while they carried out tests designed to assess their general intelligence.

Researchers then created a map of a brain showing the varying levels of activity in the brains of men and women. About 40 per cent of the human brain is grey matter and 60 per cent white matter.

Bruce, that doesn't explain my brain then. I earned a BA in math and I definitely don't speak 20K words a day.... Now as long as this discussion doesn't throw off our Texas residents... we're all set.

I was in Texas twice in my life, does that count. Once when I was a small child we went through Kilgore Texas while on vacation and all I remember was seeing a lot of oil wells. The second time I was in my early twenty's,1972, and the company I worked for at the time sent me to Corpus Christy Texas on a job we were doing in a bakery down there. About all I remember about that is it was really, really HOT and one night for something to do I took a drive in the new LTD I had rented. I drove for over an hour and never passed another car on the road that never had a turn in it, just straight.

I lived for three years in Orange, Texas will my father was stationed at the Navy Base there. I use to like to go to Galveston at least a half a dozen times a year. Does that make me a Texan?

5bird7
Feb 8, 2005, 12:23 PM
Gobird, Texas has grown up since then. Love to find those long straight roads but they're not so lonely anymore unless you really get out in the sticks. Kilgore has an oil museum now and not as many oil wells. One of our first new t-bird tours, we went to that museum.

I had every intention to write a book one day on our family and Texas heritage. Suffice it to say it took appeals to TWO govenors to get my great-grandfather out of Huntsville (all over a little misunderstanding - after skipping bail - about some gold and silver with his father-in-law and mother-in-law; could happen to anyone - in fact, they wrote letters to both govenors asking for the pardon).

Or that after getting the pardon, he (g-grandfather) took his four boys to Oklahoma Indian territory, then over to Arkansas to homestead a place without my g-grandmother. The majority family thinking seems to be that his father-in-law, a rough horse breeder from Tennessee who came to Bell County around 1851 and did alright in the horse and cattle business, "bought" my g-grandfather off by getting the pardon if my g-grandfather would never darken their door again or see his wife, and that to spite his father-in-law he took the boys (ages 10, 12, 13, 15). The father-in-law probably never was too pleased anyway with his baby girl's choice at 17 to marry this gambler & ladies man (by all accounts). She was the only girl with 5 older and 1 younger brothers and likely was somewhat spoiled.

It appears the boys never saw their Mother again, as her will had a provision that each of the boys had to come back within 1 year to claim an inheritance, and as far as I have been able to determine my grandfather (who was the eldest son with whom he lived, and who cared for my g-grandfather until he died in 1916) never got anything from her estate. Since my grandfather died in 1939 when my Dad was 11, we never had the chance to find out for sure, or what the real story was

I have some connection with most areas in Texas, and though I have lived in Oklahoma, Ohio for a short period of time, as well as 4 months in Scotland, I don't think I could live anywhere else. And even if I tried, it would be as a bachelor as my wife, a native as well from Lockhart and San Antonio, has said I could live anywhere I wanted as long as I kept sending the checks home to her in Texas.

So I choose to live in Texas.

Mark501;Have you ever been to Frog Hop, Texas? Just a short jump south of Paris, Texas. GoBird I was born and raised in Kilgore, Texas. No I did not own any oil wells. The kids of the familys that did however, mostly drove new t-birds (55-57s). That's where I saw my first t-bird. Fiesta Red with White hardtop. I'm going to win the HGTV 2005 Dream Home at Lake Tyler and move back to Texas. :pinkie: :bouncy: :pinkie: :bouncy:

Just to give some of those from smaller states an idea of how big Texas really is: the last mile marker on Interstate 10 near Orange, Texas reads 897. So from Orange to El Paso is nearly 900 miles. That's a whole 'nother country.

Bill Brown,

I can't say that I have been to Frog Hop, but if it's in the vicinity of Paris I may have inadvertently passed through..I know where Turkey Scratch, Arkansas is!

We were roadtriping last summer and passed through El Paso then on to San Antonio when Laurie became irate about the size of Texas. She said, "This is ridiculous! They need to do something about this state being too big!" I replied "Like, what should they do?" She says..."Make two states out of it!" Uhhhh ok Laurie....

Have you thought about going to Hot Springs in Arkansas?

DTBird
Feb 21, 2005, 02:59 PM
Dot, in two words: Hell yeah. When the posts started coming up about Hot Springs, I had already booked the rest of this years vacation time in Oahu and Maui. I KNOW how beautiful it is there and especially in April. Years ago, highway 7 was ranked as one of the top 10 most scenic roads in America. Back then, I decided to ride my Yamaha from Houston to Ohio. That was the most beautiful road I had ever been on until years later when I went to the blue ridge mountains. I think they rival each other. I want to attend so much it hurts. I'll be there next year even though I am not too big on horse racing ---or gambling. No, not a religious thing. I just don't find enjoyment in losing hard-earned money that would be better spent on mods. Yup, when those pix get posted, I'll have to suffer all over again.

My dad was C.O. Co. C Infantry class of 44. Became C.O. as a butt due to the zipps all being called up in late 42. His entire class ( other than the 4f's) were called up after the second semester and served proudly. He was C.O. but never had his boots nor sabre. Butts were all advanced in grade but still could not wear boots. His class was the only one with command officers who never had Sr status and boots. He came back after the war and finished up his degree in M.E.
Just before he died he was honored at his Sul Ross reunion as one of the 2 Aggies who jumped on Corregidor to liberate it and the Phillipines from the japs. A great generation who we are losing by the thousands ever day.

Ther are a lot of you Texas folks that we haven't seen at an event yet. Why not plan on going to Detroit with us this summer for Motown Thunder? If you think that is too far then we also invite all of you to try out something a little smaller at OZARK THUNDER this fall in the beautiful state of Arkansas.

Time to venture out of the Lone Star State!

Count us in for the D/FW area. We'd hoped to make the March event to Dot's place but something called "work" got in the way.

Dime box is just a stone's throw from me. Is anyone planning on attending the 1st w/e in Dec at Dime Box? Here's a brief history of Dime Box...........

DIME BOX, TEXAS. Dime Box is on Farm Road 141 twelve miles northeast of Giddings in eastern Lee County. It originated between 1869 and 1877, when a settler built a sawmill near what is now State Highway 21, three miles northwest of the site of the present community. Records suggest that the mill's builder was Joseph S. Brown, and the settlement of British-Americans, Czechs, Poles, Germans, and German-Wends which grew up around the mill was known as Brown's Mill (Browne's Mill, Brown's Mills). A Union School opened in January 1874. The school later housed the local Presbyterian church, which was one of the earliest of this denomination in the state. Until a government post office opened in 1877, settlers deposited outgoing mail and a dime in a small box inside Brown's office for a weekly delivery to Giddings. The Brown's Mill post office closed in December 1883. When it reopened the following spring, frequent confusion of Brown's Mill with Brownsville had caused the town to be renamed Dime Box. In 1913, when the Southern Pacific Railroad built a line three miles southeast of Dime Box, the original settlement became Old Dime Box, and the new railroad station became Dime Box. The railroad encouraged growth, and the community's estimated population increased from 127 in 1904 to 500 in 1925. The town received national attention in the 1940s when a CBS broadcast kicked off the March of Dimes drive from Dime Box. The number of residents remained between 300 and 500 throughout the middle years of the twentieth century and was estimated at 313 from 1972 through 2000.

Johnny,

Sounds like fun. I work evenings (including Friday & Saturday), so the earlier a date is set the better in order to make arrangements to take the evening off.

I also saw your other post regarding your interest in having an active club for retro Bird owners in the North Texas area. I still haven't heard from the group who began taking names & e-mail addresses at the Denison Car Show, but as soon as they make contact, I'll forward that info thru TBN.

Last, I believe the TBN member signed in as Redbirdsal (with the posting above just before yours) is in a club that meets the last weekend of each month (Apr-Oct, I believe) at a place on Bowen Rd. in Arlington. You may want to look up some of her posts regarding that event.

Hi! That's me, James!
My Special Interest Ford Club has a car show the last Sat of each month at the Fabulous Fifty's Diner at S. Bowen and Park Row in Pantego, TX. It's a small township within Arlington.

If anyone here would let me know they're coming, I'd do my BEST to be there!

Our Show is open to any vehicles...not just Fords. We draw an average of 40 cars per show, and we always have a good time!

Y'all come!!

not sure of the odds but my 02 is blue with white top - just over 400 built that way. I used to live on the border of Keller where there are now two blue with white tops residing. If we were still living there, there would be 3. However I've only seen 1 of those once in the 7 years since we've had ours. Anyway, if I go down business 287 I'll be watching for your merlot.

CARTOY is one of three Red Birds within three miles in my area of E Dallas.

Last weekend I passed a Red w/Red hardtop at an intersection just off LBJ and Gross. I pulled over to see if they were coming my direction, but they entered LBJ. Don't know if it was one from my neighborhood or not.
Of course I could have turned around and caught one of any other color...cuz we ALL know RED is FASTER!

Well, the Bird's been in Texas for just over a week. The shipping went fine and it is nestled in the new garage here in Cedar Park. Still have Oregon plates but hope to fix that before long.

Now I can hardly wait to get some help to get the top off! My wife had to head back to the old house before she could assist. :thumbsdow

I was wondering about that since I have seen numerous plates with 7 digits but the application for vanity plates still had only 6 digits when I checked a few months ago when my plates were due. All the ones I wanted were taken.

Just checked on the TX DMV website.
From what I found on their site, we might be able to get 7 letters for personalized plates this fall. It's being worked on. For now, all that is available with "7" letters is "T" and your 6 letter combination.

Welcome to Texas

Great to have another bird in the North Texas - Dallas area.
I totally understand about the dings. I always park out away from other cars in parking lots and for some reason the bird just seems to attract other cars that park right next to it. I have a ding on the passenger side wheel well I need to get removed. Hoping to be able to get it taken care of with a paint less dent removal process.

Hi again, George! Welcome to TBN!

Folks, let me tell you that George is already a wonderful asset to our Texas TBN Chapter.
I sent him a message that another member in Abilene was in need of a good mechanic, and asked if George knew one well enough to recommend him. George let us know of one in record time!
Thanks George! :bouncy:

BTW: I sent you a "Welcome" note not long before the request for a recommendation.
Hope you found it... look up in the right corner of the page, under "Welcome,George." It should state that you have 1 notification.
