Mike, with his detailed instructions about how to get at the strip, and Harry with his stick-on idea, make good points, and perhaps the following is concept something you might consider:
Use dry transfer lettering, it would not stand proud of the strip, doesn't look plasticky (is that a word?), isn't terribly difficult to apply, is available in white, and would probably look factory. Here's a site that will enable you to convert inches to points, so you can find the correct size; and here's a sample from Amazon. You can find it locally at art stores, blue print stores, etc. I hope this will at least make an interim fix for you. Best of luck.

Once those 2 screws are removed the console pulls up. If you want to remove the shift knob you have to push the collar at the base of the knob down the shaft until you see the set screw, loosen it pull up on the knob.

Hope this is helpful and best of luck.
On my 04, there are no screws holding the console in. The console just snaps in place and pulls right out. The two screws under the heated seat panel hold the heating controls in place, and are 7mm. Went through taking the console apart installing Sirius radio adaptor.

Just to close out this issue, I found a new plastic piece with shift indicator letters (from a car with Select Shift) in a Spokane junkyard and swapped it out. Attached before and after pictures... much better! As some of you noted, don't have to take off entire console, just the top part that pulls off without screws. Then remove shifter handle (2 screws), pull off bulbs, and swap out. 15 minutes. Also took the time to switch out the e-brake leather boot because mine had a tear in it. Total cost for leather boot and plastic piece = $40.
