According to an engineer friend of mine, hand placement on the steering wheel should be dictated by which configuration provides the best defense against the AIR BAG should it deploy....does that make sense to any of you out there in retro-land?

Yes. If your arm is blocking that airbag, there's a good chance you'll break the arm if the airbag goes off.
