Cracked windshield

Darn, just noticed a large crack in my front window.
It started from underneath the windshield wiper when a small stone hit it.
Crack is about 10 inch long now.

Already called the dealer for repair.
Hope they can ship an original to Holland soon.

Re: Cracked windshield

Sorry to hear that.
Do they have "Windshield Repair" people in Europe who can stop a stone chip from spreading if they repair it in time?

Re: Cracked windshield

I'm not sure that crack can be "repaired". It looks more like a replacement. I'm not sure how the auto insurance works in the Netherlands, Fritz, but here in many States, glass coverage would fully pay for the windshield replacement.

Good luck my friend!

Re: Cracked windshield

I am not sure if my insurance will cover this. Have to check that. If not it will cost a lot (with shipment and all).

Re: Cracked windshield

Fritz,
I had the exact same crack last month. I got passed by a tricked up Hummer and I heard a bang but the crack didn't appear for several minutes. I contacted my insurance company and they set up an appointment. Oddly the original equipment glass from Ford was cheaper than a generick one. So we waited for the one from Ford. The bill was for $650.00 of which I paid my $50.00.

Re: Cracked windshield

The first year I had mine (2002) a stone hit the window and chipped it with two very small cracks going out from it (each was about 1 mm. long). A guy came out and did some sort of repair on it and I haven't had a problem since. However, some day it could extend again and if it does, I'll need a replacement too.

Re: Cracked windshield

Picked up the car this morning with a new windshield. Original Ford Thunderbird material. Dealer did a good job
They even filed a request to my insurance company to pay for it.
Cost of the windshield itself was €450 (about $500).

She is in good shape again now. Time to get cruisin'

Re: Cracked windshield

I'm curious Frits, here in South Carolina you just drive into a glass repair shop and they contact your insurance company, install the windshield, and you drive out. No money changes hands as there is no deductible on windshield glass replacement. Does it work that way in the Netherlands?

Cal

Guess not Cal. The repair of a chip or small crack is free of charge. When the window needs replacement it is matter of insurance company policy. I hope mine does

Re: Cracked windshield

Did they replace the glass with the Thunderbird logo (logo is located in bottom centerof glass) windshield Frits? $500 sounds pretty cheap for that windshield, and wasn't there shipping on top of that?

Re: Cracked windshield

Yes they did Julie, and it surprised me too. The windshield came from the US and is an original with the T-Bird logo. This dealer imports a lot of Fords and Lincolns from the US and they just put parts in those cars as they told me. That way shipping cost is no issue.

Re: Cracked windshield

After a year of my stalling (and living with a growing crack in the windshield) finally had to get it replaced in our Inca because of a safety inspection due. We had the guy out yesterday and took photos of the process of him replacing it. The hardest part seemed to be taking all the trim off. If one had all the proper tools, it wasn't too complicated to actually remove and install the windshield.

This will hurt, Frits. I got the OEM windshield too - with all the correct logos, etc. Cost was $272.75. so I assume your cost was not too far out of line since it had to be shipped overseas. Total cost for replacement was $420 for the rest of you (minus our deductible). We had it done by Safelite and the installer came out to our house to install it.

Sally, He (installer) arrived around 11am and was done by 1:30. Of course we delayed him some by hanging around and conversing with him. Did I mention I also took photos?

Re: Cracked windshield

I think it was 2 weeks for them to get the glass. They ordered it last June but they missed their appointment with us in June and we didn't reschedule it done again until this month. I assume they still had the same glass they had ordered last June. (Not many tbirds get their windows broke). They had a plain PPG window in stock last June with no Ford Motor Company nor bird logo so would have been the same window without the OEM stamps.

I guess the strong Euro vs. weak US dollar worked to Fritz's advantage.

I'm glad it worked out.
