Thanks, Ellie. I have already had bunches of fun getting to know my Featherweight. It has kept me entertained since we have been snowed in for the last four days. Sorry yours was lost - like losing and old friend I expect. What model was it and how long did you have it?

Mine was made in March of 1961, and given to me in the same month, same year...my 11th birthday. I had learned to sew on my mother's 1939 model White-Westinghouse (which I now have), and she wanted me to have my own machine. I moved to Tidewater in 1971...and an entire crate did not arrive at it's destination. The Featherweight was in that crate. The compensation from the moving company didn't even begin to cover the loss - monetarily or emotionally, but as I said, I do still have my mom's old W-W, and my Bernina sits on top of that cabinet now. I don't dare try to use the W-W...it would have to be completely rewired (and it started out as a treadle).

Margaret got one similar to Charlotte's from her Mother's house back in 1993. We kept it for about 17 years, without doing anything with it. We lost storage space in our last move, so we put it out on the street for the garbage truck to pick up. RIP Singer.

We did sell a treadle Singer in a garage sale for $50 (?).

You said "All" the attachments . . . . If you have a "walking foot" attachment for it, it is worth almost as much as the machine (If not more). Congrats on the Quilter's choice/dream.

Nope, John, no walking foot. I think that the "walking foot" was not a standard attachment piece. But I feel lucky to find a machine that still has its original attachments, including the original oil can, and all in good condition. Maybe later if I master the attachments I now have.

Thanks, Susan. I think it is pretty special. I have enjoyed sewing for many years - since I took home economics in high school. I took it as a challenge that my home ec teacher said my project was the worst in the class and so I became determined to make something I could be proud of. I did and have been sewing ever since. I have never done any quilting althought I love quilts and own several. The Featherweight seems to be made for quilting so maybe this may be my motivation to give it a try.

First Citizens Bank associates across the country were invited this month to submit stories about the favorite gift they were going to give this season, and the best ones were published on our internal newsletter.

Some of them were for "things", one person had managed to get a couple of tickets and accomodations to the next Kentucky Derby for her parents who are avid horse lovers. One associate plans to spend tonight at a homeless shelter, working to serve food to the needy.

One of them, however, wasn't even about a gift the banker was planning to give. That person volunteers at a Christmas tree sales lot which uses the profits to help children with cancer. They have a "burn barrel" on the lot to help folks ward off the cold. Numerous homeless folks from the area will come and warm themselves around that barrel. One of them thanked the folks who operated the lot for allowing them to warm themselves and asked the associate what they did with the money they raised. After hearing the answer, the person left and returned a couple of hours later with 80 pennies that he had collected to give to the cause.

My mother had one of these treadlys. It was her mothers. She gave it to my borther and he lost it when one of his x-wives cleaned him out.
I even used it when I was a teen to repair some of my cloths and yes, I even ironed my own shirts.

About 20 years ago my grandmother gave us her old treadle Singer that my grandfather bought her in 1920. Still works to this day (has instruction manual, too). My grandmother (before her death) replaced it with a more modern Singer, but said her old one worked better (her arthritis prevented her from using the treadle too much).

Nice, Charlotte. I haven't used mine in several years. It probably needs some good oiling by now.
As for my favorite gifts this season - George bought me a digital weather station. Now I can "read" the weather outside, without going outside!
and a friend bought a Sandra Lee cookbook for me. Not that I'm going to ever use it but I do enjoy watching her cooking/decorating shows.
