my 93 tbird

Since a lot of people are experts around here, I'd figure I'd ask what is a good asking price for my 1993 thunderbird? I also rather start high and work my way down. Also, should I even sell it? I use my 04 as my everyday car and have no payments on either the 93 or 04. So to keep the 93 would only cost me insurance which, as a college student, could become pricey. I'm just worried that if something goes on it, I won't want to fix it and then will get no money back on it. The reasons for keeping it are it's my first car and if I have to go somewhere that I'm nervous to bring the 04 to, I can bring the 93. However, something could happen to the 04 pretty much anywhere, so I don't know if it really makes sense to pay the $1800 or whatever on insurance for the 93, especially when the next 9 months I'll be living at school and not really using either cars. That being said
1) what's a good asking price
2) should i keep both cars

Here's the upgrades I've done on the 93:
I had the seats redone, new headliner, new lights with sylvania silverstar bulbs, body kit (looks somewhat like a supercoupe), sony mobile es stereo (paid 330 for it.. but that was also a few years ago), 4 pioneer premier speakers, 2 12" subwoofers with a pioneer amp (may offer this extra), k&n air filter, dual exhausts, new shocks and struts, new break system

only 80,000 miles are on it and only myself and my father owned the car....

Everything is pretty much perfect on it other than the paint is peeling pretty bad.. especially on the hood....

Keep the old 93. At some point in your life you will want to pass this T-Bird on to someone. I think this model T-Bird was the best of the T-Bird family until they came out with the new 2 seater model. I had a Red 93 V8 LX loaded with all the FORD options you could purchase in 1993.I gave it to my oldest grand daughter when she was a junior in hight school and she was the only student at that school with a T-Bird and everyone loved it. I now own a 2005 Cashmere and her sister will get this car in a year or so.

My advice is to keep your 93 if it is not too much of a financial burden ... If you have spent that much on getting her in good order then why decide after you have had your new Bird for a few months that you want a daily driver when you have sold a perfectly good car a few months before: That is my 10 cents.

As long as you can afford the insurance, keep it.
And be happy! My son (your age, also in college) is driving a '94 Plymouth Voyager Van with a really bad transmission! (He's had a few motoring 'mishaps' involving a great Mustang..and this is essentially a disposable car....we learned the hard way...)

There's another option that would let you keep the '93 but pay far less in insurance. You could store the '93, and drastically reduce the insurance. You'd still want to keep comprehensive on it, in case something falls on it, etc., while in storage. That, plus whatever storage fee you might have (depending on where you store it), might be significantly less than keeping insurance on it for driving, plus the cost of operating it year round. One caution: If you do store it and reduce the insurance, DO NOT drive it unless you notify your insurance agent ahead of time and reactivate the normal coverage. You don't want to get in an accident if the car isn't covered.

I was thinking of putting classic insurance on it... my dad said that it's only like $80 a year... it's under my mother's name (my dad said that you have to be 25 to get this insurance).... I'm not really too familiar with it, but I'm still nervous that something would go wrong on it and I would have to pay for it....

I'll have to put more thought into this... honestly though, I love driving my new tbird... even in nasty weather i go to the 04 over my 93..

If you don't need the '93 then sell it the money from it can be applied to the '04s insurance, maintenance, gas or mods.
Your assessment is correct, if something should go on it then you will be forced to make the repairs, then selling becomes a problem. IMHO

Since we both live in Northeast NJ, where winters are not brutal, but they can make you pray for spring around mid Feb, I'd keep the 93 as a "bumper car" unless you absolutely cannot afford it, or a major item needs replacement.

That's why I've kept my 1994 TBird. (Oh yeah, I kept it for another reason-I like it! )

My insurance company offers a policy that I use my 2000 Ford Ranger pickup half the time and the Tbird the other half. Its really more like the Ranger is used 2/3 of the time and the Tbird 1/3. But it really saves me on insurance for both vehicles. I pay just a little over what I'd pay for 1 car for both cars. But then again...I'm 50 something years old and NOT a college student, so I'm sure its not as high as your insurance would be.

If it's your first car, then keep it. The sentimental value will only increase the older you get. I wish I still had my first car ('73 Chevy Blazer).

The '89 - '97 Birds were great. I had two supercharged ones, an '89 in Twilight Blue and a '94 in Black. I still wish I had kept the '89 as it was a great car.

If you are driving your 04 and exposing it to the elements then sell the 93. I agree with Bruce.

I was in the opposite situation when I got the Raven: I did not want to drive her in rain or bad weather, period. I had a dickens of a time finding a good mid 90s driver but it was worth the wait. Delta has been a great daily driver thus far.

My 97 is my beater. Love it. Its a good car. V8, 26mpg on regular. Burns rubber.

I would try to keep the car. Learned that the hard way after I sold my first. 66, 442 Olds. Sure wish I had it back now. The reduced insurance idea is a good one. If your driving record is good, you have many options. You might even consider "recational" coverage on the new Bird and make the 93 the daily driver. You would still have full coverage on both should something happen, just costs far less.

PM lowcountrybird and ask him. He is in the business and could likely give some options we might not know about.

I would keep it only if you were planning on Keeping the new t-bird as an occasional driver. But it sounds like you use the car, and few places you dont take so I'd get rid of the 93. At today repair prices, it dont take long for a bill to be worth more than a car.

Now if i were in your place, car nut here, no way would I take the new bird to school.
I'd have the old car there, store the newer till got out.
