Re: New Car Smell Good or Bad

First, I agree with some of the previous posts ... LEAVE US ALONE and STOP REGULATING EVERYTHING PEOPLE DO! Bans on super-sized soft drinks, bans on Fast food restaurants in certain neighborhoods, now they want to ban the ‘new car smell.’ ENOUGH already!

Second, I accidentally found a way to replicate the ‘new car smell’ and it’s al NATURAL! One day I left a fresh orange in my car by mistake, forgetting to take it into the house. The next day when I went to the car, it smelled like a new car. The scent or oils or essence of the orange peel created a really nice aroma, very close in my opinion, to the ‘new car smell.’ It’s not a perfect match, but it’s pretty close and as far as I know, there are NO harmful chemicals in an orange (if there are, we’re all in big trouble).

It works best if the interior of the car is warm and parked outside where the sun (if it’s shining) can ‘heat up’ the interior a bit. Either way it works, at least it did for me.
Anyway, try it and let me know what you think.

I'd gladly give up the new car smell to not have to continually clean the shmutz off of the glass from all the outgassing.

The new car smell is part of the allure of a new car. If you can smell it, you are also inhaling it. Not having had a new car for a long time.... Volatile compounds aren't all bad, but for companies to take expensive steps to reduce VOCs should send a clear message. If you are in your car for any length of time you are inhaling some of the compounds, like it or don't like it. The problem is no one knows exactly what they will do, or if an effect will show up years later, or if it will compound effects of other things we are exposed to daily. The stuff you see on the windshield is also the stuff you're inhaling. I know of no one who has been killed or injured by it, but I also can't say that cumulative effects aren't showing up. This is really long winded, sorry. Here's a link to the EPA's stance, note health effects:

I can't believe this even merits a discussion, much less a VOTE. I grew up chewing on lead paint, running with sharp objects, using lumber treated with copper/arsenic (the lumber that used to last) and, to my knowledge, have no side effects. I've made it to 62 and, according to my doctor, am as healthy as can be expected.

Yet you responded anyway..... Which part of the brain does lead paint taint?

Re: New Car Smell Good or Bad

The government and USDA, EPA, FDA, NIH, and numerous other agencies have been warning people for decades about potentially harmful air, water, food, drugs, lead-based paint, asbestos, cigarettes, manufactured products, genetically-altered produce and meat, etc., etc., ad nauseam. I’m sure these various warnings have saved lives, especially cigarettes, and I’m not disputing that. But where does it end? The alleged toxins in new car materials may in fact be harmful, but people have been buying and driving and inhaling the ‘toxins’ in new cars for how many years?

It seems to me that at least some of these ‘bio-hazards,’ or natural hazards, or any hazards to health should be ‘prioritized’ in terms of their respective level of risk. That is, I’m sure breathing smog or heavily polluted air or smoking cigarettes are much higher risks to health than inhaling the odors of a new car (maybe not, I don’t profess to know for sure).

Maybe one day scientists will discover that cancer is caused by the toxins used in the auto interior manufacturing process or products, but I doubt it. If you feed two pounds of salt to a lab rat it might die. Does that mean salt is deadly? Almost anything consumed or administered in sufficiently large quantities can cause death. Heck a person can drown from a cup of water or a tiny air bubble in an intravenous injection.

Just my opinion, and you may disagree, but haven’t things gotten a little out of hand?

              Sorry for the long post.

                  Thanks Richard!

I’ve gotten some ‘flak’ from some members who abhor my overlong posts!

I agree with Richard, Phil...no need to apologize for long posts - I'm as guilty as anyone.

Isn't it the smell of the new door grommets?

My $.02. If I'd have my way, we'd see our last apology for the number of posts or the length of any post made. Ya got something to say, say it!

I agree Bill, and apparently I‘m not the only one ‘guilty’ of long posts. I tend to throw in an apology for what I consider long posts out of courtesy to members who object to them. I have noticed that in the past week or two most of the thread I visit and post to have become more courteous and ‘user friendly’ A good sign!
