That's not a problem, Birdwings. Thanks for the information and support, you're appreciated.

Vintage Merlot wasn't broken either but I did want the most recent version of my '05 brothers. The update made a really smooth transmission up shift and down shift and much improved acceleration. The best dollar I ever spent on the car.

ROGER, WHERE IS THE WEATHER ROCK? IT COULD BENEFIT FROM A FIRMWARE UPDATE. MY UPDATE ON THE 02 HURT PERFORMANCE. HELPED THE 03 AND I COULD TELL NO DIFFERENCE IN THE 04. NO WAY IN HELL AM I GOING TO MESS WITH THE LIGHTN' INCA GOLD. I JUST WISH I COULD GET THEM ALL TO RUN LIKE THAT ONE.

Ron, from what you've said I wouldn't fool with the Inca either. Since it's a 2005 wasn't there a chance that the update this thread refers to was an already enhanced computer from the factory at that time? This, of course, wouldn't fully account for why it's an exceptionally strong engine, but it might help explain it in part. Whatever the reason, it sounds like an already rare Bird is even more unusual for its power delivery.

The problem I've had with the '05 since the day it arrived has been the tranny...so here we are over 6 years later and it still lags/slips b/t 2nd & 3rd at operating temperature...and it's worse when it's hot outside (which is 50 of 52 weeks in the year in Phoenix).

There has been so much done by Ford to try to correct this and nothing has worked. If there was one reason for me to get rid of this car, THIS would be the reason (and yes, Ford updated the software on the tranny a couple of times...once they even tore the dash apart to replace the PCM).

It's too bad that you've been haunted by this, Jim, but I can certainly understand your disappointment. Was replacement of the transmission not under consideration by Ford?

The service writer told me (in our last conversation over this) that he felt the tranny should be replaced, but Ford wouldn't authorize.

That's really poor customer relations on Ford's part. You've tried their solutions in good faith and they have not solved the problem. I don't think you would be out of line to write, or contact a regional, or even national rep, or even Alan Mulally to press for a replacement. I know, it's easy for me to say, not necessarily for you to do... I'd like to know, as I think TBN would, if you decide to pursue this avenue.

I'm not sure, Richard, and I know that sounds vague. You can't believe how many HUNDREDS of hours I've spent at the dealer over this...it's as frustrating as $*&%.

I love the car itself, but told Ford that if it was any other Ford product but the Bird, it would have been gone a LONG time ago (also regret trading in the '02 Bird on this car...but that's a no-win thought process).

Re: Firmware update on your TBird Poll

I don't trust any dealer upgrading my firmware.

They are way too interested in getting me to spend money that I don't have to.

Ex: they recommended a caliper replacement on my LS with 40,000 miles. Pure BS.

And, this is a "good" local dealer as opposed to another local dealer that I would never go back to based on past experiences.

Based upon your experience I don't blame you, Jerry, but it's too bad they have to be like that. So far I have been fortunate with my small town dealer who seems to be on the level. Time will tell.

I found the shifting of gears better on my 2002 after putting the Borlas and cold air, then doing the upgraded firmware, although just slightly...

Although the number of respondents is small at this point in time, using it as a very rough sampling model, it indicates that slightly more than half of TBird owners have not updated the firmware. Thanks to all for their input.
