When my wife and I were dating in 65, we'd go everywhere with the top down on my 65 Corvette.

Now, I have two convertibles, and 1) she doesn't like either car, top up or down, and 2) the only time I can get her to ride in my Galaxie with the top down is at the Wildwood, NJ, Sept car show.

Whenever we go anywhere together in the summer with the retro (which is rare), it's "top up, A/C on".

Every time I fuss about my hair getting blown to pieces, I have to remind myself that I didn't buy it for the comfort factor!!

I should have know I was not into convertibles. Of course that would not have stopped me from buying the Tbird because it had the optional hardtop (which really wasn't an option with me - it was a necessity) because we have owned a 16 1/2 year old Lexus since new (the Lexus dealer searched all-over the USA for one that did not have a SR to no avail since it was an option) with a sunroof that hasn't been opened 10 times during that period and the "privacy screen" or whatever you call it hasn't even been sild open except when the sunroof was open. I have a friend with a 1975 Corvette convertible, and I dread it everytime I see him pull up in the driveway to pick me up with the top down.

Reminds me of an old Bo Diddley song, Say Man.

Goes like this (two guys talking, rock beat in the background):

"Hey, man, I was walkin' down the street with your girl the other day"

        Uh-huh

And the wind was blowin' real hard

        Yeah, Man

And, the wind blew her hair into my face

        Uh-huh

And the wind blew her hair into her face

        Yeah

And we went a little further; do you want to hear the rest of it?

        May as well

Yes, that and the great two tone look. The porthole is the ultimate retro feature of the retro bird. Why not use it?

For me the purpose is all about choice. There are plenty of times when I want no top, but when I do want a top I prefer the hardtop over the soft top. My favorite time for a top down drive is early evening when the sun is not baking you with it's full force. I must limit my sun exposure as I've already had a couple skin cancers.

That's a shame, you should give it a try. It's like having two cars for the price of one.

I like this idea! I like top up and top down anytime. Being 65 and a lot bald only problem is sun burning top of head.

Thuderbird baseball cap solves this problem.

                    Re: How old are you?

Owning a T-bird is like having two cars. I love putting the top down in the summer. But when I do put the hard top on and I see the beauty of the ROUND WINDOW, it feels like a whole different car. You see, another reason I purchased my Bird is that it's a WORK OF ART. The curves, low to the ground style. It's incredibly beautiful. It's more beautiful with the top on is why some people leave the top on.

Was at the mall today and we had a Vette park next to us when we came out.Isabel looked and said "you know the T-Bird has much better lines than the Vette". Not bad for an old gal (glad she doesn't look at the site )

                          Re: How old are you?

To first answer the poll, I'm 76 closing in on 77. The top down subject is, of course, whatever you like. I remember back in 63 when Corvette first offered a coupe and a convertible. The coupes were very popular, maybe the styling or maybe some not liking the wind in their hair. But our retro birds like the early classics, 55-57, only came one way. But either way, top up or top down we are driving a car that will be very collectible for many years to come. PS: I'm a top down guy as is my wife. She also loves football!!

                            Re: How old are you?

I'm 58 and we have owned the car for 10 years.

If I'm looking at the car I prefer the hard top on. If I'm driving the car I prefer the top down! Since I like driving it better than looking at it, the top is down most of the time. In fact, I haven't had our hard top on in 7 or 8 years. I have had other hard tops on for short periods in that time for TBN relays.

I doubt that I would own a retrobird if it was not a convertible.

I am sure Paul would agree that our trip out west in August 2011 (TWNW) would not have been as much fun had we not had convertibles. In fact, I would say the tops were down for a majority of trip. Even early morning starts were top down. There is nothing more beautiful than driving through our national parks with the tops down. Either way it is a great car to enjoy to the fullest.
