        California birds... what's up?

I am hearing $600-$900 from some other Californians.

I just got my registration renewal notice (due 4/24/04) and it still shows the reduced rate.

        Registration $40
        License Fee $671
        County Fees $6
        Smog Abatement $6
        Total $723

        Less VLF Offset <$453>

        Total $270

In Rhode Island registration is $60.00 every two years. However, taxes are 7% of the purchase price due at registering. Then yearly property tax based on the value of your car X the rate per thousand in your community. Same as it is for your house.

In Nebraska the initial cost to register and title my new Bird was $1,987 including $1,380 for sales tax. Plus $30 for personalized plate annually. Renewal next year should be in the $600 range including taxes. Plus we DO have state income and sales taxes in addition to property tax. Maybe it is time to move.

In Iowa, our 2002 T-Bird's tags for the year 2004 are $365.50.
(The .50 cents is to mail the little sticker to you to put on the old plate).

In IL the cost is $78 each year for plates. The best deal is for classic cars (over 25 years old) that cost is $25 for 5 years. So again it pays to drive old. Also no problems with emissions as they are exempt from state testing.

There is a little trick that lot of people use here in Alabama to avoid the 2% tax on automobiles. It is illegal but there is zero chance of getting caught so a lot of people do it. You buy the car in another state or online for say 30,000. They do not charge you sales tax since you are from another state and the tax is due where you reside. You then alter a copy of the bill of sale to indicate that you had a trade-in for say 29, 800. The clerk at the court house glances at it and charges you sales tax on 200.00. Easy as can be in my state. Of course, I would never do that to save 600.00 but many do.

So I now pay $159. (We can't figure out why it's more than the $30, but at least it's come down a lot!). Our state is blaming everything now on the loss of revenue from car tabs.
Catbyrd, we have the good old "voter approved RTA Excise tax" up here, I just did mine and here is the rundown:
                              Filing............................$3.00
                              License SRVC.................$0.75
                              RTA Excise.................$104.00
                              Other (actual tab cost)..$30.00
                              Total.........................$137.75
When I bought our GMC Suburban new in 1996 (its a 95) that registration cost well over a $1000.00 the first 3 years, thanks Tim Iman.
Whats really wrong up here is a state government gone amok...oops, did I say that...I shouldn't have said that, forget I said that...guess I hung around Haggard to much.
