  • Who has original tires?

Some of our original tires are now 12 years old, wondering who are still riding on original tires and how many miles are on them.

    Re: Who has original tires?

I voted 2002 on original tires but I recently have taken the originals off for aftermarket 20 inch wheels/tires. The tires have plenty of tread at 50,000 but are showing signs of aging.

Already two replying to the poll without indicating mileage. Be sure to select both before submitting your "votes".

Sounds like your not on your original tires.

          Re: Who has original tires?

Interesting poll Ron. I have plenty of tread on my Michelins with only 13,900 miles, but the sidewalls are showing cracks and I’ve been advised by other members to replace the tires. Seems a waste, but tread depth is not the only consideration. Don’t want a blow out.

Still on the originals with 64,000 km (about 40k). I will most likely add new tires in the spring.

Both sets are sitting in the garage on original rims that came off the cars soon after the cars were purchased.

2004 with original tires and 9400 miles. Tires are still perfect, I hate to replace them in such good condition.

Can't vote because I replaced mine a couple years ago at around 60,000 miles.

I am still trusting my 2002's and 2004's. I replaced my 2005's at 55,000 for the trip to Pikes Peak.

I'm still carrying the original spare tire after 12 years and 71,000 miles.

                            Re: Who has original tires?

I still have mine on my 04. I have 20.9K on the car now. My tires look good and I haven't noticed any cracks in the sidewalls, but I've been looking at new tires, but haven't decided on what to buy yet. I've canceled taking the TBird on two or three trips because of the stories I've read here of the older tires coming apart at high speeds. I'm convinced I'm going to buy the 235/55/17s when I buy but I just can't find a tire that I really like and it's almost time to store the car for the Winter again. Right now I'm tempted to get the Diamond Back Red Lines, I think they would look pretty good on my car with the 16 spoke wheels. I think what's holding me back is the trouble of ordering them.

                              Re: Who has original tires?

It looks like nearly 45% of the people taking the poll are still driving their 2002’s on tires that must me over ten years old now. Based on John’s post # 6, should we all be replacing them by now? I’m very reluctant to drive my NM even short distances, since based on the age, one or more tires might ‘blow’ any time. Why are nearly half the 2002 owners still driving on such old tires? Especially considering how fastidious most Retro owners are about maintaining all other aspects of their cars. Just wondering.
