Doesn't Cruise Control take care of all of this? Maybe I've been doing it all wrong!

Seems to me with the congestion on Americas highways and the number of people that want to camp out in the left lane, cruise control is rapidly becoming useless 90+% of the time.

I sure wish we had aggressive enforcement of our passing laws in this country like they do in Europe. However, they can keep their perpetual use of speed cameras over on that side of the pond.

I drive for comfort, physically and mentally, with my elbows on the arm rests which puts my hands at 9 & 3. With elbows 'loose' my hands are at 8 and 12.

My left hand is always close to the CC buttons since I use them all the time and I'm almost always in the right hand lane. No problems with other drivers or the law because I lock in at the speed limit and the majority of drivers go around me. On rare occasions I encounter someone slower than I and simply drift around them.

Driving at the posted speed limit is an amazing stress reducer and allows a more conscious enjoyment of my car instead of being annoyed by other drivers 'in the way' . If you haven't tried it don't bother ; if too many people catch on I'll end up in annoying traffic again just like when I drove the way most everybody else does .

Makes me wonder what we'll do about white knuckles when we are in driverless cars in the future. Hmmmm

Cheryl, umm, you're probably not passing me when I'm gripping the steering wheel white knuckled. What was the George Carlin line about the words that come out of your mouth when you're behind someone driving slow in the left lane and they won't pull over vs. what you say when you're in the right lane and someone goes whipping by you?

9 and 3 most of the time. Never at 12...airbag deployment can cause serious injury. Been there, seen that in my previous career.

Re: Hands On Steering Wheel Position A Poll

When I'm driving anywhere, I find my hands are at 9 and 1.

When spouse is driving, he's at 11:30 and 12:30 at the start and then switches over to 6.

As for 9 and 3 - I can see that in air bag cars but half of our cars have no air bags, so 10 and 2 would be the old way. I got reprimanded on my first driving test for not having my hands at 10 and 2. I probably had them at 10:30 and 1:30.

More & more cars today, even trucks are being built with functions like entertainment controls, cruise control, wiper, lights, hands free calling features and more in the steering wheel spokes which are usually at the 9 & 3 o'clock positions. With this in-mind I believe this is the reason why the safety experts are telling us this is now the safest driving "hands on" placement.

In the not too distant future you wouldn't be steering your car yourself. It will steer on it's own. In the works as we speak. Lane correction is already available.

Use 9 and 3 if you don't want broken arms.
