  • Fill Up or Wait till E

    Folks,
Well it's been a couple of months since my bird came out of its winter hibernation. Before I put her to sleep I filled the gas tank & put StayBil <sp> gas stabilizer in the tank. I now have a little better than 1/4 of a tank of the old gas and stabilizer left. I'm torn between using the rest of the old gas or mixing in some fresh gas. So I though I would get all of your opinions and hopefully help someone else out facing the same dilemma.

      Chuck,
We had the same situation as you, but didn't wait to fill it up. I think we hit the gas station at about half a tank and several times since

Chuck you should not drive until almost empty because you may pick up some junk from the bottom of the tank. Good rule of thumb is fill it up at 1/4 of tank. (IMHO)

I winterize and store as you do. My opinion is to run it down a bit below a quarter tank and then fill it.

If possible never go below a quarter tank on gas. The gas is what cools the submerged electric fuel pumps. The fuller the tank is with gas the cooler the pumps will run and in turn the longer they will last.

Fill it now, it will cost you more tomorrow. Never go below 1/4

I commute in mine and never let it go below 1/4 tank. I agree about the cooling factor. Next fall I would leave it 3/4 full and put some gas additive like Stabil.

I always fill up between 1/2 and 1/4. Try to drive her year round when roads are dry. Can be two to three weeks between drives in winter but never use stabil.

one of the first things my dad taught me about cars - never go below a 1/4 tank, and in the winter (in Chicago, anyway), never let it go below 1/2 - 1/4.

                          Kathe,
I think every dad gave their sons and/or daughters that piece of advise. Like you and many others I still live by don't let it drop below 1/4 of a tank. Never, ever!

Gasoline has a tendancy to turn to varnish over time as the water and hydrocarbons evaporate. For that reason, I would suggest mixing fresh premium in with the 'old' fuel in the tank for those who store their cars.

Ideally, you should put the car up with a full tank. This will prevent condensation inside the tank which can form on the parts of the tank that are not submerged in fuel.

I also fill up routinely at 1/4 tank, for whatever that's worth.

                              Cheers!
