Bruce, how perceptive of you...everyday driver, got almost 31K miles in 26 months. The car handles well in snow as long as it's not too deep. Ice is a whole nother thing, most anything is tough to handle on ice.

I don't drive it in the rain, snow, or sleet. I only take her out of the garage on nice days. And never at night during the summer. It seems that those darn bugs like her as much as I do. Driving this car is better than tharaphy.

TOTALLY agree, Dot. Winter is the pits even here in relatively warm dry East Tennessee.

BUT ...there's THUNDER FEVER to look forward to in early May.
I really feel for those poor wretched souls that have not registereed for this once in a lifetime event. How will they ever get thru the winter without therapy ??????

Re: What's your Bird doing this Winter?

As much as I'd like to drive it every day, I wouldn't get much driving enjoyment worrying if someone was going to slide into me, or hearing the sound of salt pellets hitting the car from vehicles in front of me.

But, on nice, rain/snow free periods during the winter, assuming that the streets have been cleaned, I'll drive it at least once per week, even if it's just for a few miles on a Sunday to keep it limber.

(I'll even take the two oldies out every now and then.)

I guess I'll learn how to wash Birdy in the winter cause it's an everyday car for me. Wouldn't have it any other way either! I love this car! But I'm not looking forward to 35 degree days washing and the wind howling, turning my poor fingers into ice blocks. YIKES! We have very over zealous DOT people up here in the mtns of Western NC. If the heavens have the slightest indication that maybe a teeny flake of snow may fall, the salt trucks come out in force and school is cancelled. It's crazy and will drive anyone crazy as well. I'm not really looking forward to driving in snow, but am curious as to how the bird will do. Hopefully, after all this rain we have had, that it will be a dry winter. Yeah, dream on..........

Re: What's your Bird doing this Winter?

My hard top will go on some time this month and the winter rims & Blizzaks go on in November. My bird takes me safely through anything that this Ontario weather can throw at it. With its low profile and RWD it's great in snow. I wash the muck off it regularly and it will start the winter with as good a waxing as I can manage. When people ask why I drive it in winter my reply is "Because I can!!"
Nothing is great on ice though! (except my 2 sons who ice race Festivas in Minden, Ontario - but they're fanatic about it!!).

Who started this cold miserable thread? Hmph, don't like thinkin' about it.
Last winter was fairly mild however. Only had the snowblower out 3 times. My '97's the daily hazard driver, but the conditions were favorable 3 or 4 days each of Jan., Feb., and March to get the gleaming Torch RRRRed TFORTWO out of the (heated) garage.
Jerrym3 is so right about the perils of northern winters. Sand and salt alternating with wet and snow and ice and below zero temps are definitely not good. Throw the other drivers into the ice sliding mix and there's a recipe for catastrophy. Thanks, but no thanks. I'd prefer to spend the time detailing my prize possession rather than visiting a body shop.

LibbaBird799- Some advise on winter car washing. First off, put a real good wax job on that PCR before winter! When washing at below 50 degrees you'll freeze your hands off, I've washed in 45 degrees or so with rubber gloves on, still c-c-c-cold! Find a GENTLE automatic car wash that you can take your car through...this is the only way you'll get the snow/ice-removal chemicals etc. off the car thoroughly, particularly in the areas you can't reach with a hose and sponge. I take mine through the car wash during the winter and have seen no aftereffects whatsoever, either on wheels or paint finish. If you have installed splash guards, take the front ones off before going through an automatic car wash, they are not bolted on, only tabbed on, and they will come off. My car is an every day driver, driven for two winters, has 31K on it, and it still looks nearly new when I wash it.

Hey Funx3, thanks for the tips! I'll definitely put a fresh coat of wax on birdy and I hadn't thought about using a real car wash, but that's a great idea. I haven't ever done that since we haven't had the hard top on yet!

Hard top goes on 1 Nov. Then the 'bird comes out only on nice days with no threat of salty slush puddles!!

We'll be using it during the winter and we're hope we can get the hardtop back on We've got a problem w/that - don't have any large men-folk close by to help Joe and I'm useless for the task, especially since I'm about to have knee surgery. I'm taking NO chances these days!

I guess even if we don't manage to get it back on (the hoist is something we're considering buying) we'll still use it on nice days, but the nice warm garage is reserved solely for the Bird days off (the other 2 will have to suffer the winter on the driveway - no big deal).
