OK, we talked about fuel so now let's talk oil. Some of us "old schoolers" are a bit uncomfortable with 5W20 "sewing machine oil" in our new Birds. SO I ask you the T-Bird nation, what weight do you use?

Personally I use Castrol Syntec 5W20 but the light weight oil does make me uncomfortable.A. J. Sam

Re: What Type of Oil are you using?
Whatever is on sale.
Really, I have used the Castrol 5/20 in the Bird from new. Don't plan to change. I also do this myself at every 3,000 miles whether it needs it or not.
Also put a new Purolator L15317 Filter on , this is the same filter that came on the Bird from new.

Same here Gobird, I'm sold on the Castrol Syntec. The Purolator L15317 is my choice too. It's a bit more expensive than other Purolators but then again, it's imported from Germany.Originally posted by GobirdWhatever is on sale.

Wow Chuck at 6.5 qts per, that's an expensive oil change!!Originally posted by ChuckRed Line fully synthetic 5W20
Even though it sells for $6.99 per qt, I'm sold on Redline Oil. It's all I use in my Motorcycle but it only requires 2 quarts.Last edited by ajsam; Nov 3, 2004, 07:55 AM.A. J. Sam

Re: What Type of Oil are you using?
I am also uncomfortable putting the recommended oil in my car...it just doesn't seem right. But, like an obedient child, I use 5W20.
I wonder who the person is who uses "OTHER"? Are they using Olive Oil, bacon grease or what?Livin' Life To It's Fullest

Re: What Type of Oil are you using?
Read through the Motor Oil thread. I think Motorcraft 5W20 may have gone up to $1.86 at Wallmart, but it represents the best value in Oil for your vehicle if you Do-It-Yourself. A full synthetic may not be good for your engine, especially when new. And over $2.00 a quart is a waste of money.
It really doesn't make sense to change it yourself when you can get an oil/filter change for $18 to $20 at your local Ford dealership. Just the verification that it had been done with the recommended products may be worth more than the oil change cost sometime in the future.
I know there are a lot of pseudo-experts out there but I still trust the Ford Engineers to know what is best for the engines they design. I still know many of them and believe me, if $6 a quart oil was better, they would recommend it just to protect their babies. Certainly, don't use anything but Motorcraft 5W20 for the first 2 or 3 oil changes - and I've never seen a valid arguement to use anything else for the vehicle life.

Re: What Type of Oil are you using?
Red, I agree with what you say but, going to the dealer means making an appointment, driving throught traffic to get there and sitting in their waiting room for 30 to 45 min. while they do the job. I just like going down to my garage, turning on the History channel or NASCAR race, pulling out the jack stands , floor jack and creeper and a couple wrenches and go to it. After the car is jacked up and the oil plug pulled with the catch can under it I let the car drain for a very long time to be sure to get all the dirty, dirty oil out of the pan. Sometimes this can take as long as 2 to 3 hours and while all that dirty oil is draining I can sit back and watch TV and have many many
. I then put the plug back in along with the new filter and start to refill the crank case. This is a very long prosess also. I tip one quart of oil into the filler hole and then sit back and have a couple more
.You have to let every drop of oil drain from that plastic container, remember, you don't want to polute the earth when disgarding empty oil containers. I know this whole process takes a little time but it is will worth it. I really like changing my own oil.:pink: :pink: :pink: :pink:
