This topic made me have a hankerin' for waffles, so this morning I went and had some.

I asked for Aunt Jemima maple syrup, but was told, sorry, we only have Log Cabin.

Oh well, you can't have it all.

HEY KEVIN, ON YOUR PANCAKE THREAD MY RESPONSE IS "SO WHAT"!

ON YOUR JANE FONDA THREAD, WHILE MANY OF US DISAGREE WITH YOU , YOU ARE ENTITLED TO YOUR OPINION. DON'T START TO BACK OFF ON WHAT YOU SAID. AT LEAST BE MAN ENOUGH TO STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU MAY BELEIVE IN, RIGHT OR WRONG. HOWEVER, IF YOU COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT MAYBE YOU WERE WRONG ABOUT SOMETHING THEN AGAIN, BE A MAN AND SAY, MY THINKING WAS WRONG. WHAT THE HELL AUNT J........ THE PANCAKE SYMBOL FROM YEARS BACK AS ANYTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING IS BEYOND ME. MAYBE YOU COULD GET TOGETHER WITH JANE FONDA AND START A CAMPAIGN FOR THE PILLSBURY CO. TO RE-IMBURSE EVERY BLACK AMERICAN WHO FELT HURT BY THAT SYMBOL. NOW THERE'S A CAUSE FOR YOU AND HER TO WORK ON! GO GET EM BOY!!!!

For almost 100 years, a company USED "Aunt Jemima" the "Mammy" stereotype of black women.
The Mammy stereotype has a long and complex history and is born largely out of a romanticized view of slavery and U.S. apartheid.
When Abolitionists (those who opposed slavery) began to focus their attention on the sexual exploitation of black women by white men, supporters of slavery responded by creating the myth of the "Mammy."
At a time when white culture looked down upon dark skin, thick lips, obesity and kinky hair, Southern slave holders capitalized on these characteristics and the black woman as Mammy became part of American iconography.
Mammy was purposefully imagined as asexual - and not sexually desirable - and was confined to a maternal and care-giving role. She fed and catered to the needs of the white family - and was "happy" serving in that role.
But "house slaves" were not a staple of the antebellum South. Most slave holders could not afford to have enslaved people working both in the home and in the fields. Only after the end of slavery and the disintegration of Reconstruction did black women come to work in the homes of whites in significant numbers. Racism (and sexism) in the Jim Crow South left black women with few employment opportunities. For many, serving as housekeeper, domestic servant or nanny in white homes was the only option.
The brand name "Aunt Jemima" derives from a 19th-century minstrel song. To build name recognition, the pancake company sponsored a promotional campaign featuring performances by "live Aunt Jemimas" who flipped pancakes and told stories about the "old days." For nearly a century, the Aunt Jemima image fed into long-held misconceptions of slavery and Jim Crow.
In 1989, the company replaced the historical Aunt Jemima - the most famous American Mammy - with a pearl-adorned "black housewife" figure.
Quaker Oats' decision demonstrates that we often do have control over the images selected to represent people. Are there contemporary brands of food, clothing and housewares that use demeaning logos? What can you do to encourage companies to stop using them?
Do you KNOW what it's like to have to live with that EVERY day?

Does anybody know what ever happened to Aunt Jemima on the pancake box?
Rumor has it that she just up and disappeared.
WELL I KNOW THE REAL STORY!

You see I ran into Aunt Jemima one day.
She told me she got tired of wearing that doo rag wrapped around her head.
And she got tired of making pancakes and waffles for white people to eat while she couldn't sit down at the table. She told me that Lincoln emancipated the slaves but she freed her own damn self. You know the last time I saw Aunt Jemima, she was driving a Mercedes-Benz with a bumper sticker on the back that said,
"FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD ALL MIGHTY, I'M FREE AT LAST"
Everything you say may be true. I was raised in the south and never gave a thought about that sack of flower as it represented anything other than a sack of flower with a logo. So I had to be taught the hatred that people have. I am more concered about the motivation of this thread's author.

                Absolutely NOT!

The correct answer is the NAACP, NOW, ACLU, US Federal Judges and the US Supreme Court. Most of the judges and justices were, and are, lifetime appointees of Nixon, Ragan and Father Bush. Junior is continuing the march.

Getting back to a more pleasant topic, remember Al Jolson's blackface performances of the 30's and "Buckwheat" of the "Little Rascals"?

All last week I told a Tbird owner that she should join TBN. I mentioned all the good stuff about our cars that is passed on here. I'm afraid we've changed and our web site is no longer full of information about the car. While these foray's into politics, religion, war fighting and now racism in advertising are interesting, it tells me that like everything else our web site has slipped away from its original purpose. Also interesting is that at the top of the page there are two ads. One for a pancake dispenser and one for "Pancake Chef". Is it possible that the Justin's are behind this little excursion into the world of Aunt Jemima?

i think the google adds "read" words in the title of the thread and place "approiate" advertisements in them. most dont notice as T birds is the main topic... look at some off topic threads... though it would be funny.

I think you are right, Drew. I remember a thread awhile back that had to do with the new car smell or a leather smell or something like that. Two of the keywords in the posts were "odor" and "smell". The ads that accompanied the thread had to do with feminine hygiene products. Someone even made a post about how weird the ads were.

Bob, I agree. When I first began logging onto TBN back in the Summer of 2002, I was turned off by all the back and forth that was going on, even if some of it was in jest. Once you've been here awhile, you get used to it and even enter into some of the ribbing. I can see (from personal experience) how some of the recent threads and discussions can be a turn off for someone new looking for a car owners web site.

The other folks are right about the ads. Watch them in each thread, they pick up on some key word in the thread and advertise accordingly.

You know, Bob and Phil, you are absolutely correct. I wish the Justins would eliminate the "off topic" threads completely and totally. There are a wealth of sites for those discussions, but TBN (even off topic) is not one of them. I have close friends (could happen) on both sides of serious issues here on TBN, some of which are totally opposite of me. I have already hurt some of them by taking one side or the other (or even no side). I want to keep them as friends!

One can argue, present hard facts or even fantisies to 99.9999% of all people and they will never, ever change their mindset. Right or wrong they will carry the persecutions, prejudices, fallicies and resolve of THEIR opinions to their graves. They will mount life long crusades to cram THEIR opinions (right OR wrong) down persons of different persuasions throats and most tragic of all, instill the same opinions in their descendants. Like you, I am embarrassed to have FMC, sponsors, and prospective members monitor these type posts.

I am MOST embarrassed in MY participation in these fruitless and meaningless postings. Accordingly, I pledge to NEVER again participate in postings of a religious, political, racial, ethnic or gender nature. I hope others will make that same decision and let's steer TBN back to it's original purpose!

I HOPE you weren't serious! What fun would we have if we ONLY talked about T-Birds all the time?
After all, unless someone comes up with some new mods, for those people who've been here for a while, we've pretty much covered everything.
The banners aren't so bad, heck, I ordered a book about Elizabeth Montgomery the other day from one of the banners. It's a good book!
And while I was doing research about Aunt Jemima, I found a link to TBN!
