That wouldn't make a very pretty skyline, with all the Moscks, and the smoke from the burned out cars used for car bombs!

Actually, the remains are in the cornerstone of the Freedom Tower to be recovered in the event technology allows further identification that DNA cannot provide right now. The footprints should be considered hallowed ground regardless of where any remains are.

I don't like the design of the Freedom Tower, but that will probably be the utlimate one used after some security issues are settled to the satisfaction of the NYPD.

I still can not believe the program that we run lost a graduate to 9/11. He just got a job working in food service for that Kanter Fitzgerald outfit in one of the towers. He was on the 101st floor...............

Re: Freedom Tower, or Twin Towers?

On September 11, 2001 two of the guys I work with and I went to lunch at a country club bar that had a television. We wanted to see what we were hearing on the radio at work. Like everyone else around the country we watched in disbelief.

We worked near Princeton NJ and left early that day. Needing something to bring back a little sanity we headed to the beach to surf. There's a great amount of calming spirituality that is found by being in the water. However, on this day you could see the smoke filled sky over Manhattan that is 50 miles away.

As a surfer on any coast knows, occasionally you will miss a day of work or be late because there was a really nice swell. Doesn't matter if you're a public sanitation expert or a stock broker.... that's just what happens. September 11th was one of those days. As the days past several stories came out about guys who worked in the towers and had skipped work that day to surf......and probably saved their own lives by doing so.

I know this isn't on topic and I guess had little point, but thanks for reading anyway....

            Continuing off topic .....
RustyFrye, I understand about the calming effect of the water. I prefer to stay out of the water, but I love to be near the water for that very reason. There is a serene effect much the same as I've experienced talking to the moon on crisp, clear night.

There are so many stories, associated stories, and emotions. A moment in time, we should never forget.

Re: Freedom Tower, or Twin Towers?

Without a doubt, no person alive over the age of 5 on September 11th, 2001, will ever be able to forget what we were doing, or where we were, that fateful day!
Just as we will never forget where we were, or what we were doing, on the day John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, or Robert F. Kennedy, were killed.
I once saw a ladies broach at a flea market, that I regret not buying, it wrote out "Remember Pearl Harbor", in Rhinestones, and somewhere, maybe where the word "Pearl" was supposed to be, there was a pearl. It was $25.00 and I didn't buy it, but I've regretted it ever since!
I have this silly, spooky, feeling that I was AT Pearl Harbor, in a previous life!
Maybe that's why I still call them "JAPS" to this day, and I'll never change it, OR own any of their cars!
I used to burst into tears when I was a child, and saw any film footage of the Pearl Harbor attack. My 10 year old nephew sobbed during the recent movie "Pearl Harbor".
It's strange, but I feel the same way about the Muslim's in this country. It takes all the strength I have, not to scream at those silly assed women in the scarves, or the dumb assed men, with the towel heads, or "dresses".
After September 11th, you'd think they would have more sense.
I don't say anything to them, but if looks could kill, they'd turn to CINDERS!
I know I'm ignorant on these matters, and they may be Islamic, not Muslims, but I have a difficult time with ANYONE in this country who doesn't speak ENGLISH!
My ancestors came to this country BEFORE Ellis Island was even built, but the French, and Irish, part of my family soon learned English, the British didn't need to, but they all came into the "Melting Pot", of what makes AMERICA!
I don't wear a kilt, or a beret, or Hail To The Queen", so why should these people "FLAUNT" themselves in front of us after September 11th? Yes, some of us wear crosses, or crucifixes, or a star of David, but these people are just TOO MUCH in your face!
I know black people who take offense to "African American" because their ancestors came to this country over 200, or 300, years ago, many of them before OUR ancestors did. They say they're NOT African Americans, but Americans!
Gee, I didn't intend to get up on this "Soap Box", but I feel so strongly about attacks on American soil, and I guess I just relate Pearl Harbor so much to the destruction of the World Trade Center, I think HUGE retaliation is necessary!
              WHERE is OSAMA?

I wasn't around in 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked, but I thought the atomic bomb should have been dropped on Tokyo after seeing the movie. Ironically, the film debuted a mere 3 months before the 9/11 attacks. We must be careful not to paint people with a broad brush, however. In this country, we had (have?) the KKK who are just good ole "Christian" boys (fanatics, bigots, intolerants).

Re: Freedom Tower, or Twin Towers?

Which ever way you go, it will be wrong.
Did you know that 47 countries have re-established their embassies in Iraq? Did you know that the Iraqi government employs 1.2 million Iraqi people? Did you know that 3100 schools have been renovated, 364 schools are under rehabilitation, 263 schools are now under construction and 38 new schools have been built in Iraq? Did you know that Iraq's higher educational structure consists of 20 Universities, 46 Institutes or colleges and 4 research centers? Did you know that 25 Iraq students departed for the United States in January 2004 for the re-established Fulbright program? Did you know that the Iraqi Navy is operational? They have 5 -100-foot patrol craft, 34 smaller vessels and a naval infantry regiment. Did you know that Iraq's Air Force consists of three operation squadrons, 9 reconnaissance and 3 US C-130 transport aircraft which operate day and night, and will soon add 16 UH-1 helicopters and 4 bell jet rangers? Did you know that Iraq has a counter-terrorist unit and a Commando Battalion? Did you know that the Iraqi Police Service has over 55,000 fully trained and equipped police officers? Did you know that there are 5 Police Academies in Iraq that produce over 3500 new officers each 8 weeks? Did you know there are more than 1100 building projects going on in Iraq? They include 364 schools, 67 public clinics, 15 hospitals, 83 railroad stations, 22 oil facilities, 93 water facilities and 69 electrical facilities. Did you know that 96% of Iraqi children under the age of 5 have received the first 2 series of polio vaccinations? Did you know that 4.3 million Iraqi children were enrolled in primary school by mid October? Did you know that there are 1,192,000 cell phone subscribers in Iraq and phone use has gone up 158%? Did you know that Iraq has an independent media that consist of 75 radio stations, 180 newspapers and 10 television stations? Did you know that the Baghdad Stock Exchange opened in June of 2004 and that the Iraqi economy is BOOMING? Did you know that 2 candidates in the Iraqi presidential election had a recent televised debate recently? OF COURSE WE DIDN'T KNOW! WHY DIDN'T WE KNOW? OUR MEDIA WOULDN'T TELL US! Because a Bush-hating media and left wing liberals would rather see the terrorism prevail in the world rather than exercise some common sense and patriotism. The lack of accentuating the positive in Iraq serves only one purpose. It undermines the world's perception of the United States and our soldiers. All of these fact are verifiable on the Department of Defense website - and many other independent sources.
                  Does this make my point?

Speaking of the dark side.... a local theatre at the mall showing Star Wars had a minor problem yesterday morning. Keep in mind fans bought tickets weeks ago and some people were in line 3 hours before the 12:01 am showtime. Somehow there was a mixup in reels. Halfway through the film the characters began speaking Japanese. Needless to say the movie goers were less than thrilled.

This is sad. I can't believe I gave a Negra Modelo to a guy who quotes Ann Murray songs.....and he's not even Canadian, eh?!

I agree that the two landmarks represent something completely different.

                        But, both are highly symbolic.

Those buildings were right outside my office window (from the Jersey side). I've been on the NY Harbor boat tours on a warm evening and stared at these two monoliths, all lit up, glowing brightly.

When I think of NY City, I think of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the WTC Towers. Everytime I see a TV shot of the NY skyline, whether it be on the nightly news or Law and Order, something is missing. When I see an old movie that has a shot of the Twin Towers, I get ticked off all over again. As I ride along the Hudson River to work, again, something's missing.

I don't have that feeling about a Home Depot or WalMart.

Not rebuilding them tells the world that we were afraid that the same thing might happen again.

                        Are we?

Great post Marion! After the fall of Sadam and after the Iraqis reissued the Dinar (without Sadam's face on the currency), three of us at work bought some of the new Iraqi Dinars. We did it mostly because the new Dinars really look cool, and because the war has made Iraq part our history. I gave some of the larger bills as Christmas presents to members of my family. I attached a note with a brief history of Iraq and the war, and told them that someday they could show their grandkids some real Iraqi Dinars. The Dinar is currently only worth something like .00007 cents per US dollar. Before the war, one Dinar was equal to as much as 3 US dollars. When we bought the brand new Dinars, it cost us around $25 per 50,000 Dinars. Like I said, we did this on a whim. Should the Iraqi economy really boom someday, we'll have a pretty nice nest egg, which is something we didn't even think about. If nothing else, we have a piece of history and should it ever be safe enough to visit Iraq, we've already got our vacation fund.

Negra Modelo is OK if you don't have a Guiness handy. Where you really shinned was your special coffee. I don't know what was in it but keep it coming. Here's what I would like to see on the TV News today:

                            I rolled out this morning
Kids had the mornin' news show on
Bryant Gumbel was talkin' 'bout the fighting in Lebanon
Some senator was squawkin' 'bout the bad economy
It's gonna get worse you see, we need a change in policy

There's a local paper rolled up in a rubber band
One more sad story's one more than I can stand
Just once how I'd like to see the headline say
"Not much to print today, can't find nothin' bad to say", because

Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town
Nobody OD'ed, nobody burned a single buildin' down
Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain
We sure could use a little good news today

                            I'll come home this evenin'
I'll bet that the news will be the same
Somebody takes a hostage, somebody steals a plane
How I wanna hear the anchor man talk about a county fair
And how we cleaned up the air, how everybody learned to care
                            Whoa, tell me

Nobody was assassinated in the whole Third World today
And in the streets of Ireland, all the children had to do was play
And everybody loves everybody in the good old USA
We sure could use a little good news today

Glad to hear Iraq is doing so well, you wouldn't know it from all the suicide attacks. If they're doing so well, then why are our people over there getting killed? Why don't they run their own damn country?

Saw pictures on the "Today" show this morning of Sadam Huessen in his drawers! They're going to make a BIG DEAL out of it!
Some poor American will probably be sent to prison for THAT, while they're filming Americans having their heads cut off!
What's wrong with us that we're mortified by photos of naked prisoners, or Saddam in his Jockeys, while we keep right on eating our dinner as we watch blood, and gore, from wounded American soldiers?
                              I just don't get it.
