How to turn off or answer the RED Messages Icon on the right top

HELP!!
Ok This is almost a newbie question, but frankly I have been winging it since the site change over. The icon appeared this morning. Normally I can hap hazardly find the topic and goes off. Today that isn't working or ? So what is the secret? Oh yeah I did check for new messages in the PM section.

The red message icon has been there for a while. It's red so you might notice it. I don't think there's a way to get rid of it. click on the red button and it will take you to the message center. It shows 3 types of messages which are either a private message, a request message from another member, or a notification that there are replies to a thread you have subscribed to.

To reply to a private message, you have to do it the hard way, ie, start a new message and address it to the person who sent you the private message. Not sure why we can't make a direct reply to a private message.

That is not correct there is a way to respond to a PM without starting a new one. Click on the blue subject of the PM and that will allow you to respond directly. Found that by accident.

The red light will go out if you delete the message.

It also goes out if you read the message or go to the notification. Again, found out by accident.

Yes but it seems you are not the only one who has been confused.

The red will go away when you open the message or if you open the thread that you either started or have been quoted in.

I never realized until the site change over how many different ways there are to utilize it and how many different ways people go about it.

Since I check the site regularly I've found best way for me is to:

1. Set my preference to Latest Activity.
2. Open the messages with Today's Posts
3. Read and reply to those topics that interest me.
4. Ignore the topics that don't (just about anything to do with Texas high school football).

With this method you stay current on all subforums, see the original post in the thread and do not have to scroll through old posts. The only down sides I've found is that the info under the avatar and sig does not show up on the posts and some photo attachments don't show up unless I switch to the Posts mode instead of latest activity.

The last issue is not there when pictures are uploaded to be viewed as pictures, but does occur sometimes when loaded as an attachment.

For the past few days, I have seen a red number one or two in the upper right corner of the TBN homepage alerting me to a message, or so I thought. When I click on the number I would be redirected to the message center and the result would be no new message....confusing. So I thought (again), why not do a search of TBN to see if any others had simular experiences. Amazing the amount of shared experiences and problem solving that others share on a wide number of topics. Safe to say, if you have an issue regarding the Retro Tbird, a question about most any topic from NASCAR to taxes....you’ll find it somewhere on TBN. Thanks friends for all your wisdom! Oh, by the way, the message alert was due to my starting a topic in which others quoted.
