  • Replacing wood over lay dash

I was looking at my 2003 interior and noticed that the plastic wood looking dash overlay that I put on the car years ago was looking dated. I was thinking of taking it off and buying a new overlay metal one that looks more like the metal thunderbird piece on the glove compartment. I started to look on eBay and didn't see any for sale. My questions are:

    1. Any opinion on my getting a kit as to how it looks?
    2. Anyone knows who sells this kit?
    Thanks for those who respond.

Thunderbird concepts used to sell one that was said to match, but very pricey. I have in the past asked sellers to send me a sample to of what they offer. If they are on the up and up they will do that even if the sale is through e Bay. Remember though, you are going to get samples of an overlay that is faux aluminum. Basically a brushed aluminum look plastic with a clear layer , much the same as your faux wood look dash kit.

You might check carid.com. They made a lot of aftermarket accessories for our retros, a quick search showed a few with metal finishes. Would suspect that a phone call would confirm they can still get them.. Good luck

Larry be careful dealing with carid.com.In the past I had called and placed an order and specifically asked the operator was the item I was ordering in stock and was told yes it was in stock and I paid by card and within several days received a e-mail saying the item I ordered was no longer in stock and I could order another item or asked to have my money returned to my banking account which would take 6 to 7 days to show back up on my account.Left me a very unhappy camper to say the least !! Just a little heads up warning !!

I've used a firm off of Ebay called American dash trim in Brooklyn. Easy to work with and sent many samples. 718-258-2300

Before purchasing new you may want to inquire about experiences removing the old. I vaguely recall this being a time consuming and unpleasant task.

Larry, I am ambivalent re. carid.com. I bought my burled walnut dash kit from Concepts. It was a great kit (more expensive than other vendors, but I liked dealing with Adam), but it did not include the piece that goes around the shifter. I found the piece I needed at carib.com. They charged me $50 for the one piece! I received it and it was the wrong piece, not set up for my "stick shift" option. I contacted them, and they told me that I got what I ordered. They sent me another piece and charged me full-price for it, so I ended up paying DOUBLE to get the piece I wanted. It may have been my fault, but they showed me no mercy. As long as I can find a part elsewhere, I will NOT us carib.com again. FWIW.

Thanks to all those who answered. I never thought of the potential problem of removing my old dash kit. I think 3M makes a removal spray for their tape to get rid of any residue on the dash.

I purchased a Japanese Cherry Wood dash kit from the guys in Brooklyn years ago for my 02 Torch Red. Good quality product and good people to work with.
