  • Thunderbird Appreciation Day 2018 - May 20th

The official date has been announced for the 2018 Thunderbird Appreciation Day. It will be May 20th. My local club, the Mid-Atlantic Thunderbird Club, will be conducting an activity that day, likely at the John Wright House Restaurant, near York, PA, like last year. I will post the information when it is confirmed for the interest of the TBN group. Several TBN members attended last year's event.

I find it interesting that this time period was selected last year, and carried through again this year, rather than a date that has more significance to the Thunderbird. I think the date was chosen as it was at the beginning of the car show season. I think that a date more closely related to the history of the car would be more appropriate. These include:

February 20, 1954: The Thunderbird is unveiled to the public at the Detroit car show.

September 9, 1954: Thunderbird production begins.

October 22, 1954: Thunderbird sales begin

July 1, 2005: The last TBird is produced. This is the official date, but there may have been a few cars produced after this date.

OK, so February 20th is still cold weather time in most parts of the US, and not particularly conducive for a car show. And October 22 could be iffy. But July 1 is at the height of the car show/event season and September 9 is still a good time from a weather perspective in most areas. And September 9th might be the most significant date as it is when production started. I am going to do a little research to see if a TBN function can be coordinated for one of those dates, more likely September than July. I will post my ideas as they are developed. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated. This, of course, is not meant to compete with the established time period, but to add an opportunity to enjoy our TBirds with other TBird enthusiasts.

Sept 9 and Oct 22 seem like good dates. July 1st may conflict with 4th of July activities for many people. What was the logic for May 20th if you know?

Basically to keep the event in the typical car show season. Not certain why it was earlier than later.

September 9, seems a good choice, not too hot not too cold, after Labor Day (or very near ) , and the beginning of production.
Diane and I just may put an event together in 2020 if no one else does.
So if there is anyone else thinking about it..... don’t be bashful jump in and plan away.

I think additional logic was not to establish a specific date but rather a specific day, i.e. the third Sunday in May. Still not certain for the reasoning regarding a May date.

I have some thoughts, but not certain if I can get 2018 to work.

I think Thunderbird Appreciation Day started out of National Classic Car Appreciation Day.
I suspect they picked the early season date to stay away from the National Day in July.

Certainly an interesting suggestion and option.
