Looks good. Clearly less invasive than mirror removal to paint the inserts. Leaves open a whole range of ideas and color choices to customize the mirror housing.
Been looking for a quick, easy way to update a minor exterior detail. The side mirrors got my attention.
Our cars were built just before side mirrors began evolving into something more than just a mirror. Today side mirrors are a higher level trim item with enhanced trim, turn indicators, self-folding etc. In the marketplace, more expensive vehicles have multi-function side mirrors.
Mirrors on Bentley Continental GT Speed Eight, Jaguar X-Series and the LaFerrari piqued my interest.
I looked at vinyl-wrapping the entire "mirror cover" but after doing a prototype decided that distracted too much from the car itself, so I decided to add just a color accent to the bottom part of the mirror cover. The way I did it does not require removing the mirror cover itself, a detail I found attractive because I'm lazy.
The part I ended up using is 5/8" wide on the part nearest the car body tapering to 9/16" on the outside where it ends following the radius of the mirror cover. To my eye that gave the nicest appearance.
On my car, plain duct tape matches the color of the wheels and Neiman-Marcus top. There are many color choices of 5/8" vinyl tape available if you want to match or complement another color.
FYI.... if you get tired of seeing people tailgating you can always tape the other side also.....
