'65 axle bearing recommendations?

Does anyone have any advice on removing the axle bearing on this shaft? Drilling and cracking it off?

A friend recommended that I change the axle bearing with a new one, before I install the "new" shaft.

Also, not sure what is sitting directly behind the bearin. Should that be replaced as well?

You'll need a bearing puller and an arbor press but this one looks rusted enough that I'm betting you'll either need to cut it off with a die grinder
or best bet is to take it to an auto machine shop and have them press it off and press the new one on. also going to have to replace the bearing race.

Take to to a machine shop. Safest way.

You have to use a chisel and break the metal sleeve that is before the bearing. Then you can press off the bearing with a press. Press on the new bearing and sleeve. The sleeve will come with the bearing.

Almost any repair shop worth being open can press off this bearing and install a new one. If it is rusted in place, it may require a little heat to persuade it off. If you have not done this yourself in the past, I don't recommend doing it now. Have your local repair shop do it.

I had a bright idea. Screw on two slide hammers into each hole of the puller, and have two people work at it until it pops off. First drilling two holes, and using a chisel to crack it. If slide hammers won't do it as I have two snap on hammers, I'll take it to a shop.

Take the axle to an automotive machine shop and have them remove the old bearing and press the new bearing on . Pack the new bearing with grease and instal a new axle housing seal before reassembly . You should also drain the old gear oil and replace with new gear oil . Also make sure the wheel cylinder isn't leaking and the star adjuster is lubed and free to turn before installing the brake drum .You may need a new hardware kit for the brake shoes to the backing plate .

There is a very high risk with not replacing the bearing. Your current bearing may be frozen up or close to it. I live in western PA and had a rear bearing go out of my 1957 Thunderbird, (same rear-end and housing as yours). This happened at mile marker 250 of I-80 on the way to New Jersey. Not a pleasant experience. Lucky for us we found a local shop to replace the bearing and we were on our way the next morning.
