  • Spare Tire Well

Since several have already done this, I know that a 235/50-17 tire mounted to an OEM wheel will fit into the spare tire well. Has anyone tried this with a 235/55-17 tire? If so, did it fit?

Can't answer your question but in the 16 years I have owned this car I have never had to use the spare tire but have replaced the tire itself.

Maybe it's time to buy a universal inflator kit and keep the spare tire home and use space for luggage on trips. When's the last year anyone used a spare? I'll bet it's been 15 years for me.

          1. I don’t need more trunk space

          2. My SIL screwed up the wheel of the spare (long story) and the tire was original

          3. I have extra wheels so why not

I used one on mine 10 years ago but I wouldn't go anywhere without a spare. Road/tire hazards are everywhere.

With two birds, never have used the spare. I have replaced the spares after 10 years.

Yes I have but to get it to fit in the space provided I had to deflate the tire.

Gene: I found that it was more trouble than it was worth so I put the original spare back in the trunk and keep the extra tire and wheel in my garage (inflated) if I ever need it. Earl

The last time I used a spare was in 2000 on a new BMW that blew and disintegrated a tire on the expressway. I called AAA and they changed it. The spare in the TBird remains in place and undisturbed. Our RDX has a spare and no tools. AAA will come and change the tire if you have a spare but if you do not they will truck the car to someplace where you can buy a tire.....so having a spare is worth the hassle even if you never change the tire yourself.

Last week we were traveling approx. 400 yards north of the I-295 bypass around Jacksonville Florida traveling at 78-80 MPH (and getting passed on the right and left) when we blew a tire. Our son asked if we'd haul a pro-type golf bag, a high chair for new baby and his new putting green in addition to wife's seven bags to Florida. Had to line most of it on the side of the road to get at the spare. Talk about the Beverly Hillbillies. It was scary with everyone buzzing by to a single lane of the bypass.

Moral of the story, THANK GOD FOR AAA.

Just what I needed. Thanks, Doug!

Since this tire will see limited use, I’m going to use one of the lower priced tires found by Ron McCloud. I’ll mount a 235/50-17 tire on one of my 007 wheels.
