The battery in my 02 is tired, It is a Les Schwab 65X. NON VENTED. It has been in this trunk since 12/2006. In talking to Napa and O Reilly. they say if it a sealed cap battery that Venting is not necessary. So the question remains why use a vented battery, if it is a non issue??

Maybe today's battery technology might be more advanced than 2002 thru 5?????Originally posted by 007Cruiser View PostHere’s my take. If Ford could have saved money on each unit by not providing a vent, they would have eliminated it. The last time I got one from the dealer it was a 750 vented battery.

Here is some information on AGM (maintenance free) batteries that should help explain vented or non vented.
Since our retro Maintenance Free batteries are mounted in the trunk in an enclosed environment, I suspect the vent was added by Ford as a safety precaution. Does it need it to function? Likely not. But, if the battery internal system should malfunction for some reason, the hydrogen gas would have a means to escape. Without the vent, Think Hindenburg.

I'm assuming the same thing could happen with a "sealed" battery, not an issue with the battery under the hood with plenty of fresh air.Originally posted by Dennis45 View PostHere is some information on AGM (maintenance free) batteries that should help explain vented or non vented.

Dennis45 is right! Ford, as well as other car manufacturers, installed a vented battery when placing them in the trunk as a safety precaution to protect against gas build up in the sealed trunk. The gas could be ignited by a spark from the trunk latch and/or brake light activation. The battery could explode or worst case, the battery is also over the gas tank. My Lincoln LS also had the vented battery in the trunk and the Mercedes two seater coupe also has the vented battery in the trunk. I think the safety risk is too great not to go back with the vented battery.
