  • Carfax error

When I sold my 02 Blue, I had no idea what I might be offered. I accepted what I thought was a fair offer. When I got home with the paperwork, included was a Carfax report. It reflected that the car was involved in an addicent in Mexia, Tx about 6-months after I purchased it in. Under my ownership the car was NEVER in Mexia, TX or involved in an accident. Knowing this, I wonder if I could have gotten more?

I contacted both Carfax and the purchaser to advise them of the error. Do you think Carfax will correct the report?

I doubt that they will correct the error unless you can somehow document it.

Interesting thread. How did you determine that the price you accepted was fair? Did your buyer bring up the car fax? Could you have gotten more? I doubt it.

Does anyone understand the workings/info source for car fax? Could it be just a slipped digit of the vin being input?

What was the response when you contacted them? While I believe they have a moral obligation to get the correction made, I don't think they'll make the correction just on your input. Will the correction get made? I personally would bet against it.

The buyer didn't bring it up and they offered me top $ according to KBB for a car in my condition which was a little more than twice what the FOrd dealer who services the car offered, an insulting $5,000.

I had the same issue related to an accident shown on my Volvo during my ownership which did not occur on Carcheck (or whatever eBay uses) report. They even referenced a local police department accident report with an invalid number.

They promptly removed the notation and corrected the report after I contacted them.

My car's "carfax" lists it as once being stolen in Texas and recovered in Kentucky, a fact I find intriguing. Except that when I tried to find the details of the incident it became obvious the theft never happened. Who knows...

How do you document something that never happened?

Show that you are the original owner.... They will tell you what you need if they can't resolve the accident report themselves.

At work, we call these "fat fingered" mistakes. Some of these entries are entered by hand on accident reports, insurance claims, etc. They may happen on 2-3% of entries that you make. Try entering 100 VIN numbers, or even USPS tracking numbers, and see how many you get wrong. That 2-3% seems to be a pattern for my entries-so I check my work.
