  • Gear letters on shifter scratched

    Hello all,
I've been trying to find a solution to repair scratches that have removed part of the paint that makes up the lettering on the gear shifter showing you what gear you're in.
To my surprise that paint is completely exposed without the normally clear plastic you would expect so during normal use bits of the paint has been scratched off making more light shine through. At night it's very noticeable.

Now, we don't need the letters to know what gear I'm in but I try to take very good care of our Tbird so this eye sore bothers me.

I assumed i would be able to find something to replace the letters then I could fashion/buy a cover but so far short of buying a whole new shifter to the tune of almost $400 I can't find a way to fix this.

Has anyone else found a solution to this problem?

    Thanks!

I haven't heard of this before. See if you can find a sheet of decals with the right size characters and paint it black and apply them.

I had the same thing in my 02 and it was annoying me. Rather easy and cheap fix. Ordered a shift indicator from Ford e-Bay vendor for a few bucks. Using info from this forum, I was able to remove the top of the console and remove a portion of the trim, the bottom of the dash stack, the one with the seat switches (if you have them...02 doesn’t) and the gear shift handle to access the damaged shift indicator. Switched them out, replaced damaged with new - reinstalled all items as noted and the job done. Easy to do...take your time!

Found this,it might help. There is a difference with shift patterns between an 02 and others.

Not exactly cheap but with this part and Steven's explanation you should be home free. Two left so hurry.

        Harry's suggestion would work also.

If the scratches are small and it only bothers you at night when the light shines through Ive used a sharpie in the blacks parts and it worked well
