  • The 1999 Black Thunderbird Concept July 2000

I have been wondering since we moved to our place in 2006, where my photos of the Black Concept had gone to.Today, I found the photos!

I never did get a page built for it before the move but have wanted to forever. It was shown first in Europe during the winter, not long after the yellow Concept was introduced to the public. I have pictures of one of those showings on my website. The CTCI club in Chicago Illinois was hosting the national CTCI convention in late July of 2000 and they were able to schedule the Black Concept thru Ford. I'm only posting one photo for now. Will have others later on on this thread.

We were able to see it in 2014 at the Sarasota Classic Car Museum during Thunder East By SouthEast. It was showing some signs of wear and tear by then. They were trying to sell it at that time. It is not shown on their website currently, so perhaps they did. As Dot posts her pictures, I'll see if mine taken 14 years later can shed any more light on the subject. I know one thing this was the color combination that I had every intention of buying when I first saw the concept. Of course they didn't make the solid red interior, so I ended up with the opposite - red on the outside and the solid black interior.

I had the pleasure of attending the event that Paul mentioned. We were taking a nice guided tour of a interesting museum when we reached the Bird. That was the end of the tour for all practical purposes. Of course we weren't allowed past the plastic chains and of course that stopped none of us. The earliest owners were very knowledgeable about the concept and pointed out many differences between concept and production varieties. Guess I remember most the 8 spoke chrome wheels.

If I remember correctly they were asking $195,000 at the time and it could not be registered for street use.

That concept is still for sale at $195,000. at a Vintage Motors Sarasota, which is attached to the Sarasota Classic Car Museum. You can go onto their website and see the car.

The other thing I remember is meeting Steve and Karen Nelson at the museum. They live in Sarasota, they came and they brought a case of cold cold water for all of us hot thirsty convertible riders.

Greg, it's definitely the same car as there was only one made. It's definitely not supercharged, here's what's under the hood:

Bill, actually they are chrome wheel covers similar to what's been used on some other late model Fords such as the Edge - if you look close at the picture you'll see the edge of the black wheel at the bead of the tire and it's also visible at the bottom when you look through the spokes (also note the Firestone tires that we would have surely been stuck with, if not for the problems on the Explorer):
