  • Hardtop Handling

Has anyone used a pair of glass vacuum handles to get a grip on a T-Bird hardtop when mounting or removing? I thought it might make it easier to handle the awkward weight distribution for my wife and i if we vacuumed on a glass handle on each side of the hardtop behind the porthole to provide a good handle.

Sure sounds like it would work! Still if the handle slips out of her hand... the results could be awful.

Welcome to TBN Earl . How about a ceiling hoist that a number of TBN members use . Go to " search " and you should find some examples . We have one and it also serves as good , out of the way storage . Assuming you have the room for one of course .

Yeah, almost as bad as if it slips out of his hand!

This sounds like a great idea. The awkward weight distribution of the HT is to the rear and that is where good wrist & upper shoulder strength is needed on the arm & hand that would be grasping the vacuum stuck on handle.

We found, my wife & I, that she is not tall enough to get enough leverage to lift and then not enough arm strength to carry the top . Now we use a hoist to lift & store the HT hanging from the ceiling of the garage.

Hey guys, if you have a Harbor Freight in the area, they have a 25% off coupon in the paper for today. Bought the 440 lb. lift (smallest they had). $75. Hope this is the beginning of my HT hoist.

Plenty of time to get one today .(After all the Ohio State game doesn't start 'til 5:00.

I believe that is the same hoist I am using in our garage, Bill. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Bill, I have been using the same Harbor Freight hoist for the past two years, works great! I built my own three point hitch harness using 3/4" PVC for the base lift bar and three 2" nylon straps with 100lb rated D-ring clips for connecting. Holds the top level and straight without any distortion for months at a time. Harness material came from Home Depot for less than $40.00.

This may be a less expensive way to improve hardtop handling.....

Is there any way you can give more details or even a sketch of your three point hitch harness?

                    Thanks. Ted.

Rusty do you attach the hoist straps on the inside or the outside of the weight plates?

Thank Senor Sturgeon, Asked by PM if he had pictures. Will share if I get them.

That guy that Black Beauty has on retainer (Stewart Weir) is sending me pictures of his. (hoisted the top up almost 10 years ago and never been down). will post when received.

Anyone else that has a homemade device with pictures would be appreciated.

Bought from Chromer what she calls a "lift bar". Will post pictures upon receipt.

Here's a post from a few weeks back selling a manual lift. It was fairly ingenious, much better than an electric one, IMHO.
I had come close to closing a deal with Don but unfortunately had to back off due to a situation that came up. Send him a PM, I'm sure he probably still has it.

I'm not Paul, but here you go. I simply cut it from the original post and pasted it here.
