  • Repair or replace chrome plated 7 spoke rim, 2002

I have a leaky tire bead which can't be sealed anymore. The chrome plating is cracked on the inward side over a 4 inch length Are there any recommendations on rechroming vs buying a used rim? Is this a typical problem or somewhat unique to these all chrome plated rims. Just don't know whether to just repair/replace this one rim or replace all four for this is a common problem. Thanks, Barry

found what seems like a very good deal on a set of 7 spokes with tires.. Anyone else interested in one wheel?

tires are 50s so they should all be capable of being spares. let me know as I am thinking of driving 2.5 hours each way to get them.

can throw them in the truck on the way to Florida and drop one off in each state.

Rusty you might be correct. this could be the deal where Navigator kicks my _ _ _ around my ears.

I had the same frustrating issue with one of my rims. After having the worn tires replaced, one tire would not hold air. Lost 10 psi over a week. Took it back to tire shop, they used some type of silicone sealer between tire bead and wheel rims. Slowed leak to about 3-4 psi a week. Chrome surface on wheel rim badly worn and chipped. Annoying, so I purchased a new used wheel from recycle yard. Problem fixed, no leaks!

ANY, repeat, ANY good tire shop will wire brush or grind the chrome plating off of this inside of the rim where the bead makes contact and apply a sealer before remounting the tire. I have had this problem on almost all of the chrome wheels Ive had on various cars over the years and each and every time, Tire Barn, or Mr. Tire, or Discount Tire were able to fix any leaks at no cost. With the salt on our roads (greater Chicago area) this is an everyday issue and all the shops know how to fix it.

Agree, I had two of these. The previous owner had a set of new Pirelli's installed but the installer did a poor job of cleaning and inspecting the rims.
Had my local tire shop remove all four to inspect. They found chrome peeling of three of the four. They buffed the chrome seating areas and applied a sealer. That was two years ago and I've not had to add air since.

Had the same problem with two of my rims. Local tire shop cleaned up the corrosion and applied a sealant. Appears to have fixed the problem.

Well, if anybody wants to have the problem fixed on a 7 spoke '04 rim, I've got one in great condition chromewise that I'll sell for $75 shipped. Just let me know.

And if the tire shop can't fix the wheel try "Kwicksilver". It is a national franchise that Car dealers use when preparing used cars for resale. I used them here in Charleston to repair curb rash and to remove a flat spot on the inside rim of a 16 spoke polished wheel. They are able to do this work from the back end of a specially equipped truck.

Bill, got everything & will, probably, send out next week or so. We're supposed to have some cold/freezing rain for the next few days followed by a few days of cold weather. I love being retired as I don't really need to get out in it. Thanks

Good post about salvaging the chrome rims. I will try to remember that if I start to have issues.
