  • Engine cover gone?

You may recall in my last exciting episode, I just missed out on an 05 T-bird by one day. Well, I found another one. But it seems to be missing the plastic cover that goes over the top of the engine. The questions are... Is this indicative of an ongoing problem that I need to avoid? Are these covers hard to find, and expensive to replace? Also I didn't see a top boot in the pictures, though it does have the hard top... Are these boot things hard to replace? It has 44,000 miles on it. Please advise...

I would venture a guess that a previous owner removed the engine cover thinking that this will relieve heat build up. At one time there was a unproven theory that heat build up was one of the causes of COP failure. To this day there is no absolute reason why the COPs fail. This failure is totally random, no reason why which COP fails & which one does not. As the years have gone by better COPs have shown up on the market & the COP failure numbers do not seem to be a great topic of discussion.

I seriously doubt you will find a new cover in Ford's parts, but certainly you should look if you indeed feel you need or want one. And of course there is also salvage yards to check. These covers do not break easily, I imagine a used one will look & function just fine.

The not photographed soft top boot is an issue, at least it would be for me. I would positively find out if the car has one or not. It is a costly item to replace if you can even find one. It is a rare find to see one on eBay or CL and they can be expensive.
Mine is on whenever the soft top is down because I believe the car looks better as well as it keeps the road dust & dirt out of the soft top compartment.

Dave the attached thread shows how some owners have cobbled together two covers into one for a very interesting look:

This care belongs to Sierra977 a great looking car. giving credit where credit is due, I believe Danny (PCR59) Provost did the first one.

I have the pieces parts (a bad cut put it under the work bench) and to the right person it is salvageable. If that handy person is you, send postage only and pieces are on the way. (Or to any other handy member.) If I can't give it away it will soon hit the street.

Sounds like an omen to me Dave. Seriously good luck in your hunt.

Or you buy this T-Bird original.

Don't understand. The Jaguar is $80 and the T-Bird is $300+.

David the boots are getting stupid IMO. One recently went for $1000. RustyFrye I believe has one for sale at $450. Guess all of this conversation on boots and engine covers are moot unless you liked the car. How was it?

You could go with the Lincoln LS cover.

The retro F.B. page has both the cover and the boot for sale.

Sorry... I dropped this thread over the heater control issue... So yes, one week ago today I did get the car without the engine cover. 44k miles, and looks like new. But it did have the boot for the soft top so no worries there. But it also came with a really nice hard top lift from Thunderbird Concepts. It is already mounted and working fine. I will be looking for an engine cover in the future also.
