  • replace a top on a retro

    Larry,

Several folks have changed their soft tops. Ron McCloud probably has the most experience with it, so I'm sure he will have some good tips.

If the problem with your PCR top is the discoloration from the top being in the well, there is a thread somewhere on the site that shows how using a steam cleaner can make a world of difference in the dark streaks. Dick Ingram used one on his sand top and hsd great results as well.

What I can tell you is don't buy a top online and bring it into an upholstery shop. You wouldn't buy a steak and bring it to a restaurant to cook it. Prices can range from $1,200 - $1,800 depending on location. Tops by Key or Electron are quality tops.

Mine has couple of those, too. I'll need a replacement in the not too distant future as well.

I have recently checked with my top suppliers for top materials for T-birds . They are running low on the original materials so don't wait too long.

If you have any questions or would like some tips, I have removed 4 and installed 3 soft tops in the past year and have fixed numerous problems with the mechanical and hydraulic components. First top removal took me upwards of 8 hours just to get it out. Now I am able to remove one in an hour and a half, or 2 hours with my eyes closed.

My PCR top is also showing some thread wear at the side fold spots. Anyone know where we can buy a replacement ash colored top that was custom to the PCR birds?

The fabric for our top was made by Haartz. Their website lists all of the correct colors and all of the companies that make the tops. Haartz does not make tops.

This one was from EZON tops in South Carolina. I checked today and they no longer have the Ash material for the PCR's and the Merlot. You can still get black, stone, and Medium Steel Blue. I bought this one three years ago and my local shop installed for $500, total $1,145.

I agree with you for the most part. If I supply the part/materials any problem would be my problem. If the shop supplies the materials it’s on them to make things right.

Sounds to me that Elizabethton, TN is the place to go for good work and good prices.
