If the trend towards electric and or hybrids is simply based on the environment, then consider this editorial comment published by George Will as part of his full article entitled "Unplug Electric Vehicle Tax Credit" on April 18, 2019 in The Arizona Republic:
Electric cars have cachet with advanced thinkers who want to be, or to be seen to be, environmentally nice. They do not think of such vehicles as 27.4% coal cars, that being the percentage of U.S. electricity generated by coal-fired power plants.
According to a Manhattan Institute study: “(B)ecause of stringent emissions standards and low-sulfur gasoline, new ICVs [internal combustion vehicles] today emit very little pollution, and they will emit even less in the future. Compared with new ICVs, ZEVs (zero-emissions vehicles) charged with the forecast mix of electric generation will emit more criteria air pollutants.” And the reduction of carbon dioxide – “less than 1% of total forecast[ed] energy-related U.S. CO2 emissions through 2050” – “will have no measurable impact on climate.”
The environmental excuse for the regressive tax credit being nonexistent, those Democratic senators whose presidential campaigns are fueled by fury about government being “rigged” for the benefit of “the rich” who are not paying “their fair share” will join their Wyoming colleague’s attempt to end the electric vehicle tax credit, if they mean what they say. If.

Have they found an environmentally safe way to dispose of the batteries? I don’t want more dangerous chemicals leeching into our water supply. My mechanic was just working on a Prius and had to pick up a battery from Toyota. Over $400 and that’s not even the battery for storing the energy to run the car. The batteries to run the car are over two grand.

There is no question that electric and hybrid cars are going to be an increasingly larger part of the cars of the near future. Having a hybrid Mustang would be an interesting option.
However, I just got my May copy of Car and Driver and it has a picture and short story of an all electric Ford "crossover" four-door titled as the Mach E and it has the mustang logo on it! A four-door Mustang - now THAT would be Heresy (ironic of me since I am a fan of the '67-'71 four-door T-birds). Hopefully Ford will come to their senses and badge it with its own name.
