  • Saddle Interior repair

I still have that 5-6 inch tear on the seat bottom where the perforated portion meets the solid material. Yes it is driving me crazy.

Some remember the story where I walked into Tom's Auto Upholstery in Columbus and the owner thought God sent me with the material to fix a black with saddle that was in her shop for two months awaiting material that she couldn't get. She graciously had a piece of my material perforated and sent to me and I was going to get with her for the fix. As you can see in the picture my material was much lighter than the seat so I asked if I could send a second piece for perforation so at least they'd match. She replied that she finally received her material and sent me a perforated piece to see if they matched,

So now I have two pieces of material neither of which match great. Ok you leather working fiends (Especially 02-t-bird and back to the future Pete) which piece to use? can it be dyed for a better match? Does leather loose it's color over time as my material used on the boot and visors were perfect matches but not now?

Words of advice/counsel from any member would be appreciated.IMG_0081.JPG

Pictures do not show colors correctly. My smaller piece is really darker and hers in the picture shows a close match but in reality it really isn't.

Thinking aloud here. Didn’t some factory seats come with a second color for that section? Perhaps you could go with black or charcoal gray.

I’m thinking of the “full interior” on a TB, IY, or TR. Did those also have a tutone back rest?

I am pretty sure Auto Custom Leathers has the correct leather. They can probably make you a new seat bottom for less than getting a piece perforated and sewn. https://autocustomleathers.com/
If it was mine that is what I would do, and I can sew my own. They have all the materials and patterns in a cad computer program. They lay the leather out and it cuts the pieces. Time is money. What would take me hours they do in seconds.

Let us know what they told you. They have the ability to dye and match any sample you send them. I would suggest you send a sample color to assure a proper match.

                Called, Jerry.

They have the pattern. Asked for seats like my 56 Tbird (white seats and back with TB Blue trim).
Lead time 3 weeks. Cost $750. Local installer might charge $450 labor to install.

That is good information for the future, Hermann. That combination would be very nice in your car.

Remember the old days when people would go to Pep Boys and buy the terry cloth seat covers?

Ok so the fine lady at Tom's Auto Upholstery and I have exchanged enough material to do two seats. She will get both hers and mine perforated and we will go from there shooting for a late summer/ early fall permanent repair. Don't want to take the car out of service any longer than I have to as it has rained for more consecutive days in my memory and long term forecasts don't look better.

The attached $23 fix ($17 cushion and $6 rattle can) sure isn't the answer but it bothers me less than looking at the ripIMG_0087.JPG every time I get in the car. Will consider buying a used seat if it comes up between now and the fall. Picture does not show the seat cushion perf but it actually matches well.

Rusty this has your name on it. Texted seller to see if he'd sell only the saddle one. We ever had a "seat relay"?

The saddle has something all over the side.

No worries. We all need to look out for one another. I looked more closely when it said they were used in a basement. Must be northern rednecks.
