  • Windshield replacement story.

Back in Sept. of 2018 when we did our west coast tour four of US on the same day got 4 of our windshields broke. Well, I waited until this past week to get mine fixed because it sat in the garage since we got back from that road trip. Between calls with Grundy and Safelite we set up a day and time to have them come to our house and replace the windshield. At 1/2 hour before Safelite was suppose to show up they called and said they couldn't do this job in my driveway or garage, I would have to drive the car 60 miles to their shop and leave it for a day, I said thanks but no thanks. I called my dealer to find out who they used. They gave me their phone number. A few calls between them and Grundy and I got it set up to replace my windshield. I'll find out on Mon. or Tus. when they can do the job. This glass installer is only 8 miles from me in Avon Park Fl.

    More to come.

This will be the 4th windshield for this car in 17 years and 148,000 miles.

I had to replace the windshield twice in one year and both times it was a truck that kicked up a stone while driving through Ohio. I wouldn't mind getting a small stone crack again because there are so many micro chips from sand that it seems less clear even when spotlessly clean.

Mine got broken last week. The glass company the body shop uses said they could only get a Chinese made windshield and they tended to be wavy. They are buying the windshield out of my parts car and removing it and replacing my broken windshield. By the way the ratchet strap holding my hard top broke and the hard top dropped on the car. Who would have ever thunk a less than 100 pound weight could brake the strap.

I got two windshields last year through Ford. They have the Thunderbird on them, but have PGW instead of PPG. What was the damage to the top and car?

Straps from China? This is why I never went the hoist route.

Sorry to hear this, Jim...while I'd never heard of it happening (until now), I installed a hoist using straps as a backup...if one fails, I have the other.

It was a good decision to not have it done at your house. We had ours replaced a few years ago and the guy was here most of a day. I swear he had parts all over the driveway, he took most of the dashboard apart. He clearly had never done a retro T-Bird windshield before. If it's done in a shop, you get the benefit of the collective experience of the entire team and not just one person who may or may not know what they're doing.

Spence we had our windshield replaced by Safelite in their shop last October when we returned from out west trip. Very happy with the job they did. Lee conned the guys out of a can of Safelite Glass cleanner. It is really great also she uses on stainless appliences.

One thing I found out about these cars is they are rock magnets. My car had 160 miles on it when the first windshield was broken by a rock.

I wonder whether a good glass shop could polish a lot of that out.

I was wondering if that is what broke the windshield.
