  • Turn Signals

Our 2003 DSB is experiencing something strange with the turn signals. When first putting on the turn signal, either direction, the blinking is very erratic. One blink, long pause, another blink, normal blinking, pause, one blink, pause etc. All bulbs front and back are working.
Might this be caused from some module going bad ?????
    Thanks for any ideas.

I would guess it's just the blinker.

I wouldn't jump to any dire conclusions until I made sure the bulbs were good, seated well and the sockets aren't corroded and the flasher is working properly...

The 02-05s do not a flasher type relay often found in older car's. The flash is created by the FEM.
But don't jump at this until like Frank pointed out check the bulbs & their sockets.

A interesting point to know......What happens when the Hazzard Flasher is used? Is the blink pattern consistent & strong like it should be or do they re act like the turn signals?

Another option is to pretend its a BMW. Then you never have to use a turn signal.

The blinker relay makes a sound as expected. I wonder what actually switches the turn signals?
An OBDII error code switches both turn signals a couple of times, and of course, the turn lights are also activated by the hazard switch.
I will look at the diagrams and see.

Looks like the blinker relay sound is just there to let you know the turn signal is active and to remember to shut it off.
It would not hurt to replace the blinker relay anyway since it may set the blinking duration.
                    Turn Signal Lighting.

The turn signals are divided into two areas. The front and the rear. The left and right front turn lamp outputs are controlled by the FEM and the left and right rear turn lamps are controlled by the REM. The multifunction switch is hardwired to the instrument cluster. When the switch is in the left or right turn position, the instrument cluster sends a command via the SCP network to the FEM and the REM. The FEM will in turn process this information and output the appropriate command to the front turn lamps. The REM will in turn process this information and output the appropriate command to the rear hazard lamps, which are the turn signal lamps. All lamps provide lamp outage indication

Now it gets more interesting......with the car not running, hazard flashers and turn signals work fine, just like they are supposed to. However, when I start the car, both flashers and turn signals are intermittent. All the bulbs are good...…...what now ?????

Is this the car that was struck by lightning? Am I remembering incorrectly?

Yes Gene! Last time I talked to Mike he saved this Lightning struck one and sold the Blue replacement. Don't think being struck by lightning has any thing to do with this do you?

Time to run OBDII check on all the modules.

                              I wouldn’t rule it out.
