  • key question

Just bought my first Tbird , picking up today.
There was only one key and fob with the Ford dealership . they were going to give me an extra key but said their system would not allow
them to program key with Car.

What has other owners done in this situation

Welcome, Frank! That’s a new one on me. Never heard of a dealer that couldn’t program a key. Maybe contact a different dealer or a locksmith? Please tell us how you make out.

Welcome to TBN, Frank! I agree with Gene about the dealership, perhaps you might call the service department and see if they give you the same story. I have heard that keys can be programmed at places like Lowes. Good luck.

If you have the owners manual look at pages 69, 70 and 71. It says you can program a spare key yourself IF you have two programmed keys available (which you don't), but says an authorized Ford dealer can program spare keys. As suggested, contact the service department (if the salesman told you that) or another Ford dealer. Programmed key fobs are not new technology, or unique to T-birds, so they certainly should know how to handle it.

The Ford dealership can do it. Whoever you dealt with did not want to. If you were only speaking with sales person than understandable. They usually are not up on what can & can't be done or where to find out.
Like Richard suggested talk to service. The How to do it is in the Ford service shop manual and I believe it is in the car's owner's manual.

Like the above said......Lazy salesperson.....If you demanded it, they would have obliged, and the service departments fee would have been charged back against the profit in the deal. Not anything new.

My Ford dealer has done that three times for me. Service department knows how. They should also be able to cut the key.

That's my thought, too. It has to be a chipped key since it has to communicate with the car when you insert it in the ignition and will depend on the year of your car as to which chipped key to use. The remote fob is programmed separately.
