  • Rear axle

I’m at my local Ford deal because of a fluid leak on my rear axle housing. If you look under the car from the rear it’s that 8 bolt plate. Was originally told on the phone it would be about an hour job costing about $200. bucks. Upon further inspection once the car was brought into shop it suddenly became an all day job costing about $1,200. bucks. It seems the entire axle housing needs to be dropped to access the housing bolts. All of this for some silicone sealant...
On another note, just received my new Borla exhaust yesterday and can’t wait to see the problems I run into when I start that job in my garage

        Hi Walt,
I did my own Borla install by myself with the car's rear wheels up on ramps. It is fairly easy job to do. The OEM exhaust system comes off as one piece from the CATs on back.
My tips to you would be to loosen that connection first then unbold the hangers at the rear bumper. The other hangers are welded on and you will be using them with the Borla system. You will also re use the rear hangers so don't discard them.
The hangers have a rubber donut like piece that the exhaust system fits to. It is somewhat difficult to pull or push the exhaust system hanger out of that donut but I found that slopping liquid dish soap on the rubber let it soak in a few minutes it helps get the two separated.
And lastly before you tighten the sections of the Borla to their final tightness insure that you have the tips out to where you want them to be. There is some latitude of movement that allows you to get that distance how you may want it. For mine, at the price paid for a Borla system, I wanted the Borla name out where it could be seen. Just out past the trim.
PM me if you have any thoughts or concerns.
        Mike

Thanks for the info on exhaust replacement. I have 2 jack stands and hope they will lift rear end up high enough. If not I’ll punt

I've done 2 Borla installs, Walt, and if I can do it, anyone can do it. It's a simple bolt-off/bolt-on setup - only semi-difficult part of R/R process was the rubber hangers, but once you figure out one, you'll figure out the other. Mike had good insight on that. I kept the Borla exhaust tips set back more than others do, but its just a matter of taste.
            Best wishes on the axle.
