  • Help needed with how the lamps Works

    C2520A76-0718-4488-8859-ADC1077734FD.jpeg Hi all friends
this is not a big problem (I hope)
Im just wondering how a original Thunderbird works.
i got my new Fem this week and just to be sure that im not frying this one too i have disConnected
all connections that is made on my car here in Sweden to pass inspection.
now i have Connected almost all lamps back agen to original so i can install my new FEM.
the problem is that im not sure how its suposed to work because i was not the first one to rewire my car....
i have the electric diagram Book but it says nothing about brakinglight but i Gues that page 90-3 ”Lamp assembly right and left inkludes the brakinglight?
and the second thing i dont understand is parking/turn lamp Front left and right page 90-2,
are those lamps in the headlights or on the side fender?
are the round lamps in the grill foglights?

If i drive the car and set the light switch Straight up
does all Exterior lights go out Then (back/side/front)?or just frontlight?

i have gooled it hoping to find a video but not found anything yet

hoping for help from you guys and girls
    /Fredrik

Not sure what you meant by "rewire" - did you (or someone) replace one or more electrical harnesses on the car ? If so, was it done with factory parts...?

It things are correct then plugging in the lamps (and anything else) should not damage the FEM (disconnect the battery first of course). In fact, if you do NOT plug everything in you cannot determine if the FEM is working properly, many, many interactions with other components take place over the car's SCP communications buss. You will also no doubt get diagnostic errors from the ODBC software. For instance, your dash switch does not turn on the instrument cluster lights directly, it merely sends a signal to the FEM which in turn sends another signal to the instrument cluster to turn on/adjust brightness of the gauge lights..

With the dash lighting switch straight up (e.g. OFF) all exterior lights and instrument lights should be off, turn signals, brake lights will still work. Interior courtesy lights will still work if the dash thumbwheel is turned completely up or a door is opened as will the trunk light. UNLESS you have a car built for Canada which I understand has full-time daytime running lights so the headlights will be on but with reduced illumination.

On my 2002 the front bumper lamps are not foglights, those come on whenever the dash light switch is in any position besides OFF. The turn signals are in the lower amber portion of the headlights in front.

In the wiring diagrams lamps involved in turn signals or brake lights will have TWO filaments and that will be shown; one filament for normal lighting and the other for brighter turn signal/braking illumination...example is provided.

      Thank you frank
its not a new harness but made Other connections Using original harness.
swedish rules are like: we cant turn off rear lights, must have Yellow turninglights in the front, back and sides. No foglights or grill-lights only in fog or parking....
but my plan is to make the car back to original, and then make a inspection-kit that i can use once a year at the inspection(not leagal in Sweden)

That's a challenge, if I knew more about the internals of the headlight dash switch possibly some of that could be done in that device; put the modified unit in for inspection and swap the original back in afterwards - but I've never had one apart. The other requirements would indeed require some creative wiring..awkward but not impossible.

The lower 1/2 of the front headlight is an amber parking lamp that also serves as the turn signal...the small side "marker" lights do not flash - so that is a problem for you..

The company i bought it from had made a preinspection and made some couplings then i had to get it all right for a real inspection.
the fem was broken before it got to Sweden
              but works some time

The usual FEM problems are with the variable, electric, power steering "stiffening" (e.g. highway mode) and/or the gauge lights not operating...

There is a cheap, easy "workaround" for the gauge light problem the power steering problem is not so easy a fix.

If you have an intermittent problem it never hurts to pop the electrical connectors off the component (FEM) and giving them a good, healthy shot of contact/electrical cleaner. I personally prefer DeOxIt but CRC also makes the spray.

My used FEM cost $400 (USD) 6 months ago (and the 2002 is one year only, later year FEMs won't work) and then I had my original repaired for a couple of hundred dollars before the ONLY person that does the repairs nearly tripled his price. It now sits on the shelf as a "hot spare"..
