hardtop hoist

Hello group.

Has anyone made a hardtop hoist for their car, if so could use pointers on how you attached system to hardtop. i will not be storing top on system just using to take off when season begins and replace in end.

Debating on trying to build or purchase one from ebay for 200.00 and then adding a electric winch.
The system uses a rope to pull, curious if there is a locking system in case rope slips from hand.

Here is my 2018 posting on this topic. If you do a search within the forum on hoists you will find many other member's comments as well. Two years later and mine is still in use. The hard top has been hanging in storage since all summer.

I have been using my own Harbor freight Electric hoist for two years. The first "must" is to mount the hoist to two wood joist in the ceiling. I used two 5/16" x 5" wood screw eye bolts to mount a 18" x 1/2" pipe extension in the garage ceiling to support the hoist. I then used 3/4" PVC pipe with 5/8" dowel wood inside the pipe to make a rigid rod support under the top as a primary support for a three part hitch. Each end of the rod support is two of the three part harness I made using 2" nylon strap material also from Harbor Freight. The third strap is also 2" nylon material with a rubber coated double hook from Lowes that hooks under the rear center of the top.
I raise and lower my top as needed and leave the top hanging in the rigging for months without issue. Total cost less than $150.00. Works Great!!

I have that hoist and have used it a dozen or more times; no electrics and no cable brake....controlling the ascent/descent of the top is all on the operator. Its not as bad as it sounds though...the double pulleys provide a significant mechanical advantage so the lift doesn't take Dwayne Johnson to use and it can't fall very quickly even if it should temporarily get away from you... It works just fine and doesn't mar the hardtop or distort the weatherstripping during storage....and a heck of a lot easier (IMO) than cobbling one together from hardware store parts - but I admire the creativity of those that do so.
