When the first sneak peaks hit the car magazines, I saved them. A few years ago they passed from my hands to Joe Apicella's at a TBN auction benefit for the TBN site expenses. This has been a tradition for as many years as I have been a member. On a few occasions we gave donations to worthy charities like St. Jude's Hospital for children too.
The magazines were closer to what was eventually sold but the guesses about the price were generally too low. And the dealers took advantage of the slow rollout to get MSRP plus the first year the new birds were available.sigpicComment

not quite 5 years. Ford rolled out the concept car on January 2, 1999, 6 months after that article came out. Ford wasn't about to let the magazines have the "scoop" ahead of time on the actual design. Competing with the revived Thunderbird was the Chevrolet BelAir concept.

It's actually sad it didn't make it into production. It might have inspired Ford to continue the Thunderbird for a few years more.
