Morning, I'm looking for the correct process to remove and install a new battery ('05). Some say remove spare, others the rear trim panel, etc. I'm especially interested in the unusual (to me) hold down bolts/rod. I'm headed to get a new battery and want to be armed with the correct process for the installation. Thanks for any info!

If memory serves, the battery can be removed without taking anything else out (spare, rear panel, etc.). With the hold down removed, remove negative, then positive terminal connections and you should be able to slip the battery forward sufficiently to clear the rear panel.

When I replaced mine there was a good photo tutorial on here that showed the steps. See if you can do a seach and find it.
I do believe you can replace it without removing any other parts, but I did remove the rear panel (not hard to do, shown in the tutorial) and it provided a clear open path to the battery that made getting it out and in very easy. It also provided easy access to attach the vent tube and clean out the whole battery well area while I was in there.

True no need to remove the spare or any trim. But you should remove the bracket that is bolted to the trunk floor with two bolts that prevents the battery from moving forward. After doing that you can remove the negative terminal and the vent tube because you can move the battery forward at this point. The positive cable can be removed first as it has nothing in the way. When you put the new battery back in put the vent hose on then the negative cable and slide the battery to the rear and put the battery in place and put the bracket in place.
