K&N or TRUE-Rev?

Hi there,

I realize that this might be in the wrong area but I have also placed it in the 'After-market' section but it seems it might take a lot longer there to get a response. Feel free to reprimand me if this is a no,no.

Anyways, since buying our 2003 black in Dec 07, I have always claimed to be happy with the performance of this car. It does afterall claim to be more of a tourer/cruiser rather than a sports or muscle car.

After saying that, I am spending more time reading back through some of the threads and I am considering going for a replacement cold air intake. I know this has been dealt with in past posts but I was unable to find a direct comparison between the K&N package versus the cheaper True-Rev version. Am I right in saying that both these replacements do just the same thing or does the more expensive K&N offer more for the extra money.

It seems to me that the current selling price of $ 135.00 for the True-Rev seems a good price to pay for a few extra horsepower.

Don't know about "True-Rev". But early on, only K & N had one that fit our engines. and, they Look great, and add more clean air.........which then begs the question..Exhaust upgrade? Answer, YES. BORLA's!!

I have an '03 and have both the K&N CAI and BORLA PES and have been very happy with them. Like Dave, I know nothing about True-Rev.

Hi Dave,

I knew when I posted this mail that I was going to get some of you Borla converts recommending the whole exhaust system. I did consider that... for about 10 seconds then I decided that $900 plus was a lot to pay out for a different sound.

I have just paid out $90.00 for some new Aero polished stainless tail pipes which to me look a whole lot better than the stock tips which kind of hide away under the rear bumper. If anything, these new tailpipes produce a slightly more quiet exhaust note than stock but lower in frequency. They have extra resonators built in which are tuned to cancel out some of the higher frequencies. This sound, to me, seems to suit the cruisin' character of the car.

We will be down at Pappasito's this Sunday so I hope to be hearing a few Borlas in action while we are there.

Gordon....I was considering the TRUE-Rev myself. My guess is that it's probably just as good without paying for the K&N name. Let us know if you pull the trigger on this.

The K&N Cold Air Intake (CAI) units, for the '03 through '05 T-Birds, are complete CAI systems with an air box around the filter unit and a CAI tube. They are the most complete CAI units for the '03-'05 T-Birds. You cannot go wrong with the K&N CAI systems for the '03-'05 T-Birds.

The Kurtz Kustomz Motorsports True-Rev air filter unit is just an air filter, without an air box or a CAI tube. The True-Rev air filter is just that, the filter only. The True-Rev air filter is the only one, IMHO, that will work for the 2002 T-Birds because K&N does not make a CAI system for the 2002 T-Birds (and for the 2002 Lincoln LS vehicles). K&N did make a CAI system for the 2002 T-Birds for a short time period many years ago, but they dropped production of that system rather quickly because it required a long L-shaped air intake tube after the Mass Air sensor unit.

Try searching on TBN if you need more information about CAI for 2002 T-Birds.

I have added the Kurtz Kustomz Motorsports True-Rev system to my 2003 thunderbird and love the added take off performance along with the throatier sound coming from under the hood. For about 1/2 the cost of the K&N system I feel it is a good buy. I plan on adding a pair of Magnaflow mufflers to the back end of the car for an even better sound then it already has. I highly recommend the True-Rev system to anyone looking for more sound and better performance. It only took about 20 minutes to install and looks great. I love to have my hood open at car shows to show this system off!

The difference between the two is the fact that the K&N unit connects directly to the intake of the engine without all of the odd galleries that Ford stuck on for silence. It also has a baffle that seems to try to keep the hot engine air from getting into the engine.

The True-Rev unit just hooks on to the original plastic intake with a short pipe and an air filter. There is no attempt to create a cold air baffle so all you would get is hot engine air!

You would be probably better off buying the K&N filter element for the stock setup for about $100.00 less!

Me, I think I will try to build my own. Shouldn't be too hard.

Question: Is this CAI True-Rev system by the above web-site (kustomz.com etc.) the very same one that is offered by "ThunderBird Concepts" ? Looks the same to me, and "ThunderBird Concepts" has it on sale now at present. Just curious...........

Hi there,

As far as I can see, the True-Rev is the same item whether it comes from 'Thunderbird Concepts' or from 'Kurtz Kustomz'.

The Thunderbird Concepts is quoting a 'sale' price of $ 134.95 which seems to be the same price as Kurtz Kustomz price anyway.

It seems to be a pretty good deal whichever way you go.
